Fully natural hair products

Does anyone use a completely natural product or substance to clean and condition their hair?
I'm trying to eliminate as much use of chemicals and unnatural substances as possible, using lemons and white vinegar for cleaning, etc.
I'm stuck with hair products though! I've looked at so many shampoo bars for example, and when I read the ingredients there's a list of all sorts of chemically-sounding things.
What did people used to wash their hair with before shampoo was invested?
All advice appreciated 🙏🏻 with this and in fact any other fully natural cleaning/grooming suggestions.

I'd imagine people used soap in the past - soap made with ash & animal fats, then plant oils/fats & lye & scented with essential oils & later with artificial fragrance oils.
You should be able to find cold process soaps easily in the shops but you might find your hair doesn't like soap as it may be too harsh.
Maybe look into making your own hair products, then you can control what goes in it - Neal's Yard does a great book with recipes to make all sorts of face, body & Haircare products.

Something like this might be what you're looking for? Quite a few people use things like apple cider vinegar rinses instead of conditioner.. can't recommend as haven't tried it myself though.

‘when I read the ingredients there's a list of all sorts of chemically-sounding things’

Vinegar is acetic acid. Lemon juice contains citric acid. Lye, which was originally made by leaching water through wood ash, is sodium hydroxide. Add that to vegetable or animal fat and you make soap - sodium stearate.

I understand wanting to eliminate unnecessary chemicals but lots of chemicals have been used as cleaning agents for thousands of years.

There are plenty of completely harmless chemical ingredients, just as there are harmful natural ones. "Natural" doesn't automatically = good for you. Nettles are natural and you wouldn't rub those on your skin!

I suspect you'd be best off going to a health food store for what you're after, though even the most natural products will have chemical ingredients.

Everything is chemicals. Things in health food stores are made of chemicals.
Water is a chemical.
@imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere are you looking for sulfate and silicone free hair products? Lots of those about, google curly girl products.

Beauty Kubes are great. I've never got on with shampoo bars, but these are fantastic.
