I threw out loads of make up today

I just wanted to share as it feels pretty good.

I've put a lot of new unopened stuff on Vinted and it's selling well.

But tonight I went through my make up that is opened and used and I threw more than half of it out.

I bought a storage box from Wilco that has organiser bits on top (think it's for crafts) and put everything I've kept in there.

I'm tempted to get rid of more.

I had too much anyway but since the pandemic started I wear even less make up.

I'm trying to get rid of old stuff too. Aiming for one item a day. This morning's was a powder blusher that must be 10 years old! Worn it maybe 6 times.

greyinganddecaying · 01/01/2022 22:12

Good work! I stopped wearing make up (apart from mascara) in the first lockdown & love it. Kept some loose face powder "just in case" but everything else is gone.

jabmeupthe · 01/01/2022 22:17

I'm glad I came across this thread as it reminded me of doing the same thing. I have so many lipsticks I hardly wear mainly because of wearing masks now again and now I'm used to not just wearing it. I have loads of stupid eyeshadow pallets I hardly use, highlighters and general crap with broken lids that need to go that stains everything.

I did a perfume and lotion one just before Christmas and gave my half used bottles of perfume to a couple of friends and family as I no longer use it. I have two bottles of perfume I use now and happier. I think sometimes less choice is better.

IamGusFring · 01/01/2022 23:40

I have done this with make up twice recently . Did a first sweep then a second . It's very satisfying . I have made sure that I have good basics and I bought a proper brush set ( after having my make up done properly and watching her ). It wasn't expensive but seemingly is a good one .I have got rid of the palettes that are ages old and have only one colour used and the cheap one I bought to take on holiday last Summer. I bought a new Dior palette to replace them all . I have found that if I buy a quality product I use it and it is much better lasting and value in the long run. They are all in a perspex make up box from Muji. I actually find it easier and faster to put my make up on now as no dithering and "Oh I have used that in ages" guilt .

Hotyogahotchoc · 02/01/2022 18:33

I get the guilt if I haven't used it much or it was expensive but getting rid does feel good and I agree one nice palette etc is enough.

chucked out an expensive mascara today. Owned it a year, used it about4 times and it was crap.

Debsdonein · 02/01/2022 23:11

Cleared out a lot of makeup And body creams. Will continue tomorrow. Feels great getting rid of stuff 🙄

Yeah I got Hypnose in a gift set sale last year 🙄 and threw it out as didn't like it . I'm going to have another check today .
Cornishclio · 03/01/2022 11:03

Sensible as I got a nasty eye infection before Christmas by using old makeup as I use less now since the pandemic.

NoraEphronsTurkeyNeck · 03/01/2022 13:01

Thank you for this thread today, just what I needed to get me motivated.

I've just cleared out all of mine. I never wore make up much before lockdown never mind now so the amount I had was ridiculous.

Half used cleansers, wipes that were bone dry, brushes that were hotbeds of bacteria, sticky nail polish, messy eyeshadow palettes - all gone.

Bet it feels great!

I've also started a thread on not buying any more of this stuff Grin

I really want to sort mine out, I need to uy some plastic tubs to sort in all into. I bought loads of lipsticks last spring and I need to get rid of some as I'm not sure they all suit me. I'm such a make up collector. I'm terrible for it. If I like a lipstick ill buy all the shades! 😬

Have a look at these or TK Max.

I got this to hold everything I've kept including palettes

www.wilko.com/en-uk/wham-organiser-box-rectangle-19-dividers-40cm/p/0489062

It's a lot less pretty than they acrylic ones at TK Maxx

Looks more like a tool box but I quite like it for now Blush

I had three sets of these before

www.cherry-lane.co.uk/products/handi-3-drawer-plastic-storage-unit-violet-.html#

plus a big cardboard box full of palettes

DH is thinking of repurposing the drawers in the garage

I've just had a look through my makeup and have bagged up some bits I don't wear, I've tried on a few lipsticks and some make me not look as good as I could so they wrnt in the bag.

Hotyogahotchoc · 05/01/2022 10:59

Good for you @BusterGonad

I find I tend to wear the same few lipsticks and then the others just sit there

Me too. I tend to wear cream finishes the most as they are so easy to apply. I have a few mattes for evenings out. My favourite every day ones are chubby pencil style glosses. So easy and so comfortable to wear.
autismandgin · 05/01/2022 11:51

I had to have a clear out recently after using some Benefit concealer… I opened it and my husband said;

“hey I remember the day you bought that when we lived near Brick Lane” …. Which was in 2011 Blush

We both laughed and knew I had to sort through an entire box of makeup, mainly unused. To think I moved house 3 times with it all too Blush

Gonnagetgoing · 05/01/2022 12:23

Just a reminder - you can sell or give to charity e.g. lipsticks or other items if you sanitise them (rubbing alcohol?) before doing this.

I've sold a couple of MAC lipsticks which I've barely used more than twice but just state this - e.g. on Ebay/Depop etc.

LaBellina · 05/01/2022 12:26

Well done op! I have bought over 30 new nail polishes last year alone not counting other makeup and beauty stuff I bought as well Blush I think I have a bit of a hoarder tendency. I need to do what you’re doing now and this thread is giving me some motivation. Thanks for that.

Hotyogahotchoc · 05/01/2022 12:47

I find I'm the same with make up and clothes actually. I wear the same few things and lots get neglected.

I'm better at stopping myself from buying new things now that I know that about myself.

But I do enjoy make up!

I did think about selling used stuff but it's have just ended up sitting there as I've got new things to sell plus I want to sell baby clothes that DS has outgrown and it all takes time!

I gave a 2yo lipstick a go a couple of weeks ago. It smelled like an old chip pan. I think the rule is if you opened it six months ago it should be binned, but I feel it's a waste if it's powder. Mascara goes claggy anyway

WithABiffBangPow · 05/01/2022 20:59

Before you toss everything in the bin, both Boots and the Body Shop have recycling bins in store.
As you were.

Hotyogahotchoc · 06/01/2022 11:37

I think powders last longer anyway and I have tried to sanitize make up before with alcohol

But some of the stuff I haven't worn in years so I thought it's not worth holding it

I didn't know that @WithABiffBangPow I vaguely knew body shop might take their own empty packaging back as do mac and I think John Lewis but that's it and honestly didn't think to do that!
