Please help us find a coat/jacket for 13yo dd1 that is warm enough to keep me happy, and cool enough to keep her happy.

Just blown my top at dd1 for going out in a short-sleeved dress top and a thin (though admittedly stylish) velvet jacket.

She has a duffle coat which she won't wear, and a school coat (ditto). Puffy jackets are out too, for some reason, as are most other coats or jackets I've suggested. I don't want to spend a fortune, because whatever we get will probably not be acceptable by next year.

Please save me from madness and my dd from pneumonia with some suggestions.

Parka?
Another parka

JackieNoel · 21/12/2007 16:38

Bit of a bargain though you can't really see what it's like from the photo.

frogs · 21/12/2007 16:39

Ooh yes, that is a bargain.

Not sure about the parkas -- I have a feeling 'coats with fur around the hood' might have been on the long list of unacceptable items.

DD1 has a "wool" mac style coat from Peacocks teen range which suited us both - it's not the warmest of coats, but with a scarf and gloves she's been OK so far. £25 I think it was.

WendyWeber · 21/12/2007 16:40

Try Next? (Check through the pages, they have quite a few coats)

Or TK Maxx (if you could stand it at this time of year...)

JackieNoel · 21/12/2007 16:42

I think the fur on the first parka is detachable.

stleger · 21/12/2007 16:44

As mother of a 14 year old - I wish you luck!

frogs · 21/12/2007 16:45

Stleger, that is not helpful.

What does your 14yo wear by way of outdoor clothing, anyhoo?

More Next coats here but they're all either puffa, parka or duffle.

Ah - except possibly this one which is none of the above? But does have pink lining - am I right to assume she won't be a pink girl?

JackieNoel · 21/12/2007 16:57

Furry inside the hood, but no fur round it?
Not sure about this - looks a bit monk-like.
Ski one? (not clear if that's in stock or not)

frogs · 21/12/2007 17:01

WW, pink has recently become acceptable.

I think those La Redoute ones might pass muster -- I'll give her a look and see what the verdict is.

its true. I live near a senior school and they only wear a scarf even in the snow! I used to be but now I just

ggirlsbells · 21/12/2007 20:11

my dd is 15 and wears something like this but we got it from H&M and it was cheaper.

ggirlsbells · 21/12/2007 20:13

H&M have some nice belted short jackets

Maidamess · 21/12/2007 20:15

I was in Primark with my 12 year old dd today and there were lots of funky, warm looking cheap jackets/coats, voluminous enough to wear layers underneath so she won't catch her death, but trendy enough to look cool!

ggirlsbells · 21/12/2007 21:15

would she like this

not my cuppa tea but popular with teens

swedishmum · 21/12/2007 23:19

Dd1 has a military style coat (last year from River Island so can't link) - fits the bill for her as it's black, knee length and wool plus looks pretty cool. She's a bit alternative though.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 22/12/2007 00:27

black jacket

quite a few on here

black double breasted coat

black wool coat

my dd seems to suffer from that teenage immunity to the cold as well. She and her friends seem to favour cropped cotton/ fleece jacket things (H & M and primark full of them) with a lighter jacket over it if needed and maybe a long scarf( although that might be pushing it unless shes into accessories) - layering seems to be popular. On the school front some enterprising senior pupil (senior pupils have to run mini business as part of course work) came up with the very profitable idea of a school hoodie. Its the in thing to wear it so at least shes warm walking to school . Parkas seem to be out and ditto fur trims.
