I'm a curvy 18 so that affects it too I think l - oh and I'm in my 50s so not frumpy .
I like colour, don't want just plain white shirt and a pair of black trousers

Are you comfortable with wearing dresses. Wide leg trousers with an overshirt and cardigan look nice. How tall are you. Congratulations on the new job.

www.marksandspencer.com/round-neck-belted-midi-shirt-dress/p/clp60519734?color=BOTTLEGREEN

or Boden for dresses and wide leg trouser outfits

My job is smart casual. I’m also 50. I wear either dresses (wrap or shirt) over a thermal roll neck in winter or blazer over a simple top and tapered casual trousers and brogue style shoes or loafers. I’m a 10-12.

Benjispruce5 · 29/12/2021 18:03

A long cardigan over trousers and a t shirt or roll neck or shirt is nice teamed with brogues. Feels smart but comfy and the longline cardigan is slimming.

@KittenCatcher thanks for the links!
I'm 5'5" not tried wide leg trousers but I'm at a point where I want to try new stuff - what shoes do you wear with them ?

Smart trainers, low heel boots or broques would look good.

I have some peg trousers(warehouse) and smart wide leg joggers (Matalan) I wear with a tucked in top, some times a Breton strip or a round necked sleeved shell top or a roll neck. (Mango/ ff/ next/ tk maxx)

I love midi skirts I have a subtle animal print one (primark) I wear with a black long sleeved top (Sainsburys) and a plain black button down skirt (hm) with pockets and wear it with tops as above with trousers.

I have blue ponte blazer (tu) to smarten things ups if needed.

I also have two or three dresses with black tights. One a lights knitted dress with belt and pockets from next And a tunic /swing dress from primark.

I have a couple of slim belts too that help (primark)

This is my main work wardrobe and I do need a new dress and a new pair of trousers. I have worn the same things for around 5 years. And buy a few pieces each year.

For shoes I have a pair of wide fit loafers from Matalan that I wear with an orthotic insole. The orthotic is for arthritis but has made the cheap shoes almost indestructible! I also wear my non work boots if very cold. And a smarter non work patent loafer (ff) if needed.

I like pockets and quick drying non iron fabrics. I dress conservatively (higher necks and nothing above knee).

I have a gorgeous Paul Costello leather echitta day bag that can hold enough so no need for carrier bags.

I'm a size 16 (plus xmas lbs Grin) 5'5.

In summer I wear culottes and tops. Or trousers skirts and tops as above and no tights and sandals also have one suitable summer world dress for very hot days. My 'winter dresses are too hot and need thick tights!

Italian magic trousers (Google them) are great with tops, jumpers, blazers etc…

Mumof3dogs · 29/12/2021 22:58

Thank you everyone for all your great suggestions- I'm googling away ...

Four pairs of polyester trousers from a department store - brown, blue, beige etc. doesn't have to be black.

About 8 collared woven 'shirt' blouses - bright and cheerful colours and patterns. Or go without a collar to be a bit more casual - but beware of tees that cling - size up and go loose with tees.

Sensible shoes or low ankle boots for winter, sandals for summer.

A couple of jackets to go over the shirts and/or cami-vests under them if it is chilly. Could try a cardigan instead of jacket but beware of looking frumpy - it must be good condition and in good shape.

job done.

Watching with interest, late 40s, same size, big boobies. I've gone from office based suit/ super smart environment to working for an environmental charity. Most people where jeans/t-shirts/hoodies. But we have been WFH and I sense meetings are coming back. Now I'm at a loss. Do I carry on with the very casual look or smarten up for meetings? I've panic bought some trousers and I've picked up a couple of smarter casual tops. But I can't wear shirts or jackets. So difficult to know if how to look smart without over doing it!
