What sort of coat do I want?

I live rurally and realised yesterday when heading out to my in laws wearing my nice Christmas clothes that all my coats are a bit utilitarian. Most of the time the practical, waterproof, warm, but uninspiring hooded coats and jackets are exactly what I need, but it would be nice to have something a little more stylish for meeting friends etc.

The problem is I’ve no idea what sort of thing I want. It does still need to be pretty warm but otherwise I have no particular requirements. I tend to suit dark jewel colours not pastels and I’d prefer it not to be black (just to be a bit more interesting). I’m a bit on the short side but a size 10.

Any ideas?! I’d spend £100ish if it was nice. Help me find one!

Have a look at a nice joules coat?

Maybe a Barbour jacket? Smart but practical.

Do you need one coat for fancy? This could be a lovely tweed or wool, long.

I have this. It's flattering and good quality. I've had mine for 4 years and still looks good. Obviously not a utilitarian coat but links smart 🙂

*looks!

Yes @dudsville, a coat for going for lunch or coffee with friends, so doesn’t have to be waterproof or practical really but it needs to be warmish. @LaCerbiatta that one is really nice, I’ll add to the short list.

I have a black long wool coat for evenings out and a long wool camel coat for lunches out and both are incredibly warm and stylish. I adore them.

I also have the utilitarian coats but picked up two gorgeous wool coats in Vinted in late November. One is a long-length crombie type in a soft camel colour, and the other is a knee length wrap coat in an interesting warm dark grey. Both are useful for different occasions, although I could probably have only got one - the second hand price meant I could take a risk and decided to keep both.

I was in a similar style rut OP and I've since bought a couple of swing coats - the buttonless, A-line drape style. One in a dark green/brown tartan and one in a cobalt blue. If you buy wool they are surprisingly warm and very versatile. You don't have to worry about size either as they are designed to be loose.

I bought mine from ebay, but Rew Clothing makes exactly that style of coat (which I covet but can't justify on a casual purchase).

I like this one but it’s out of stock in my size: www.phase-eight.com/product/floressa-fluffy-knit-coat-950593548.html
I like that blue Hobbs one too. Hmm.
