The fear of wearing white

dudsville · 27/12/2021 08:06

Does anyone have this fear? I'd like to get over it. It's true I stopped when I was young because I seemed guaranteed to spill food any time I wore white. But I do love the white cotton floaty tops and this year I finally caved and bought one from whistles. I used it so often this year as a layer. It's been great but I'm afraid to wear it on its own. I've now been given a pretty white cotton dress from COS and I'm afraid to wear it! The sleeves are particularly nice so I'd hate to cover them but I am thinking about using the dress as a base layer, but also I'm afraid I'll somehow sit in something. I almost never sit in anything. Does anyone else have this ridiculous fear?

Not a ridiculous fear as far as I'm concerned. I am a mess-magnet.

CSJobseeker · 27/12/2021 08:10

I stain any white garment I own, so avoid it like the plague

TulipsGarden · 27/12/2021 08:11

Yes, I never, ever wear white. Partly because I'm too big (but I have thought that since I was a size 12, now 18) and partly because I would get it dirty.

Maybe you could dye the dress?

dudsville · 27/12/2021 08:23

I don't want to dye it, I want to get over my fear! I'm thinking of layering it over trousers and with a cardigan...

I end up with lunch down my front of a regular basis. I wear white shirts though, just don’t wear it on a date to a spaghetti house.

dudsville · 27/12/2021 08:27

So I will avoid red food and drink!

I've just bought my ideal white cotton dress in the sales but no idea when I'll get to wear it with a toddler! But it was too pretty to overlook Smile

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2021 10:07

It's not so much getting dirty as whether your colour season indicates whether you can actually wear white. Mine does but except for my wedding dress I don't own any white at present.

However I would say never wear a white top with black trousers or skirt unless you want to look like a waitress but actually even that's old hat now.

Parker231 · 27/12/2021 10:12

I’ve quite alot of white items - the majority for summer - linen trousers, tops and dresses. They are lovely but yes, the fear of getting pasta sauce or ice cream on them!

nzeire · 27/12/2021 10:42

I live in white! So easy to clean!
Best colour.

dudsville · 27/12/2021 11:24

Haha, thanks Roses, I never wear black!

Ok, some love of white clothes here spurring me on.

I have small dcs and am currently wearing a pale cream jumper dress! Nothing to fear op. You can do it 💪

dudsville · 27/12/2021 17:04

That's inspiring @SarahJessicaParker1!

I bought myself an expensive-for-me white raincoat.
I am afraid to wear it anywhere red wine might be opened, so it mostly goes to the supermarket.

Marble2021 · 29/12/2021 18:34

I never wear white. I am so clumsy, I just know I would spill something down a white jumper or top.

isthismylifenow · 29/12/2021 18:52

I wear quite a lot of white tops. Cotton shirts, t-shirts etc. The worst for me is getting suncream on them. It leaves that awful yellow stain

I spend a fair amount of time putting stain remover on before washing. The green Sunlight bar is the best yet.

It won't stop me from wearing them though. I live in a hot country and it's just a cooler colour to wear as well.

I do usually have some mark or other on myself after 10 mins, as I am quite clumsy... But it doesn't stop me wearing the items. I must have about 10 white t-shirts. They only last about 2 summers then they go an odd colour. But to me there is nothing fresher than a new white tshirt.

Parker231 · 29/12/2021 21:11

Slightly off topic but any suggestions of where I can buy some white shorts I’d like for a hot weather holiday next month.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 29/12/2021 23:50

My sister wears white cropped jeans in summer and they look fab on her. There's never a mark on them. Must ask her how she does it. Maybe I should leave a malteser on the sofa next time she visits and see what happensGrin I can honestly say that most white items I have ever owned look like I've been polishing shoes with them after a couple of wears.

Hairyfriend · 30/12/2021 00:02

My fears around white clothing- is underwear being seen underneath, or sitting in something dirty.

My mum loves 3/4 linen trousers- until I pointed out that her spotty, bloomer knickers could be seen straight through them!

I'm pale and will only wear a white blouse with a skin coloured bra. A white bra is very obvious unless its a very, thick blouse.

Stick to skin tone underwear, bring wet wipes or a pre-stain remover for any food spillages and it will be fine.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 30/12/2021 02:29

For this reason I don't spend a lot of money on white clothing, but its such a classic colour anyway that simple works great.

Surprisingly red underwear doesn't show through white clothing.

My dd tested this out yesterday with white shorts.

I also always wear nude underwear, white underwear shows through quite noticeably. Of course there is now a sunscreen mark on the shorts but we will tackle that when we get home.

I did have a giggle about the Malteser trap 😂

BusterGonad · 30/12/2021 14:50

Probably best to purchase some good stain remover to make you feel happier and also that stuff you put in the washing machine to restore your whites, Dr something or other. I think it's a sheet thingy. I have a gorgeous cream fake fur coat, I wore it to my Christmas do a few years ago, woke up the next day to find it covered head to toe in red wine. I took it to the dry cleaners and it was as good as new!
