Need ring making smaller (much smallerer!)

So I clearly fucked up ordering myself this ring, and (as the pic shows) it is WAY too big.

I also fucked up thinking it was a UK company, when in fact they are based in Canada.

I can get it resized via them, but think it's probably better if I take it to a jewellery shop locally. My knuckles are large, but I think I overcompensated!

Is it too big to make smaller?

Could you return it?

It looks nice but it's way too big

InTheLabyrinth · 25/12/2021 16:49

It will probably stress the stone setting too much and make a weakness to shrink it that much - looks like several sizes would be needed.
Worth talking to a jeweler, but I think I'd send it back.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/12/2021 17:00

Can you wear one of those things on the back to fill the gap? I don't know what they're called...

TheOrigRights · 25/12/2021 17:57

I can return it and start again - and maybe buy one from an actual jeweller.
Or I can send it back to be resized. If I do that, it would be worth me going to a jeweller to find out my size properly.

I'm disappointed as it was my gift to me. As a single parent as part of a family who only gives to children I just wanted to treat myself.
[pity party].

Hi OP.
Get your finger sized at a jeweller or get a ring sizer from Amazon for about £2. Then maybe you can return your ring for one the right size.
I also bought myself a special ring this Christmas (and had to use the ring sizer from Amazon to get it re-sized 😁) but it means so much to me.

Go and speak to a good independent jeweller (preferably one who makes their own jewellery to sell). A good one will talk through your options, ie can it be resized well enough, or will you need to pretty much remake the whole ring. Then you can work out money-wise whether it's worth doing or just sending back.

Gladioli23 · 25/12/2021 20:45

I think that's too big to resize it enough - I think you'll have to return it unfortunately.

AuntieDolly · 25/12/2021 20:59

Was it expensive?

Plump82 · 26/12/2021 08:49

I did jewellery and silversmithing at Uni. There's no way that can be made as small as you need it.

Anonmousse · 26/12/2021 08:54

I'm a jeweller and I would say it might be worth taking into an independent jeweller (somewhere where they might do their own repairs) and checking a) if they think it can be done and b) how much it would cost to see if that option is more cost effective than ordering a new one.

TizerorFizz · 26/12/2021 08:59

It will surely cost more to alter it than its worth! I would send it back snd start again.

I’ve seen ring size charts that you can print out. You then cut out the circle and see what size fits your finger. The ring you have just won’t be worth altering l think.

Thanks all.

It wasn't particularly expensive for a piece of jewellery but a lot of money for a single item.

I think I will return it for a refund and then take myself actual shopping. It has no sentimental value whereby keeping it and spending lots of money altering it could be justified.

I returned it, got a full refund and will go to a real shop at some point.
I have no idea when that will be though Sad

You could order a ring measurer online.

TheOrigRights · 20/01/2022 13:40

I went to a jewellers shop today and got measured. I am an L. I had ordered an R 1/2 Grin.

Probably could get the R 1/2 round my neck!
