Teen Make up

DD wears a bit of mascara occasionally. I think she’d like to have some more make up but doesn’t have much of a clue where to start. I have no idea and I don’t think she discusses that kind of thing with her friends. I was thinking of getting her some make up for Christmas. Does anyone have any suggestion of brands? Am quite happy to spend a bit on something nice, not worried about cost.

Why not book her a session at one of the make up counters and then she can choose the products. I'm not sure what brand to go for but I'm sure others will have recommendations.

I bought my 15yo Clinique double powder and one of their crayon type lipstick glosses - and they came with a great ‘free’ gift. She’s not much interested in make up, but likes the powder because it’s easy to apply and there’s enough coverage (not that she needs it) that she doesn’t have to worry about foundation or concealer. It looks very natural. Similarly with the lipstick - it’s quite subtle.

I think she’d be too self conscious for the make up session (her little sister on the other hand would be all over something like that). Powder is a good idea. I’ve always like Benefit but I don’t know if that’s an acceptable brand for the youth of today.

Fenty and morphe are both quite well recurved in my experience, if you don’t mind spending.

MrsPnut · 22/12/2021 21:39

I don’t know how old your daughter is but revolution at Superdrug do some great palettes and other items at pretty cheap prices.

SleighbellsZ · 22/12/2021 21:41

Benefit
Urban decay
Mac
Bare minerals
Morphe

Brushes - real techniques, reasonably priced and brilliant brushes

Face - powder, blush
Eyes - mascara, brown/nude tone eyeshadows
Eyebrows - young so a light pencil if anything.
Lips - a soft light pink

I think the above would be a good starter kit to play around with.

I’ve never heard of morphe, will check that out, thanks.

Thanks for this. I stopped wearing make up years ago and I don’t want DD to feel I’m pointing her in any particular direction. I just wanted her to have something available if she felt like it because she is quite self conscious over some things.

Glossier very popular here- also good for a more natural look. They have some good sets which might be a sensible place to start- brows, blush, a tinted lip balm ...

isthismylifenow · 22/12/2021 21:48

Essence and Revolution brands are great for teens.

Actually both are great for not only teens. Easy on the pocket so quite nice for experimenting with. If you get something in a higher bracket and it's not something she will end up using, it may just be a waste.

My teen loves a lot of little bits. So highlighter, bronzer, eyebrow kit, they do serums as well now. Etc etc.

MrsRubyMonday · 22/12/2021 21:56

I bought my sister one of the naked palettes for Christmas, they have a range with various neutral shades that blend well together.

For a basic starter kit, I would go with some new mascara (it gets old pretty quickly), a simple neutral eyeshadow palette, a couple of eyeliners - the Rimmel scandeleyes pencils and pens are good and come in several colours, maybe some eyebrow products - Maybelline do a very fine tip eyebrow pencil which is great and doesn't give that overdrawn look, plus maybe a tinted lipgloss or sheer lipstick. If her skin needs some help then maybe a concealer or tinted moisturiser and some powder, again the Rimmel pressed powder is my favourite, possibly a matte bronzer and blush but these aren't necessary. If you want to add something fun NYX do a load of bright eyeliners which are great to play with.

loveinthe90s · 22/12/2021 21:58

My teen loves Glossier, Milk, and E.L.F brands. Lots of her mates like Florence by Mills too.

RooDollFace · 22/12/2021 22:09

Thanks. I’ve seen Fenty in my local Boots so I’ll see if they stock any of the other brands mentioned.! A big Harrods Beauty opened locally the other day so will head there first thing

Got Bare Minerals translucent powder which I used to use and liked, Benefit mascara and eye liner (plus free brow stuff from nice woman in John Lewis) and a Fenty pallet of neutral shades. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

Sounds perfect!

Merry Christmas Xmas Smile

RooDollFace · 24/12/2021 09:10

Thanks. I nearly got some Bare Minerals brushes then remembered the Real Techniques advice - that saved a few quid!

They are brilliant brushes, I wouldn't go back to using any others now.
And the price tag is nice haha

doadeer · 24/12/2021 11:20

Glossier
Fenty
Elf
Mac
Urban decay
Charlotte Tilbury

bonfireheart · 24/12/2021 11:24

DD13 did a free makeup consultation with Mac online. No pressure to buy items. Asked her what she wanted to know more about and was really lovely in talking her through.

Would also recommend
MAC
Morphe
Revolution (their advent calendar was £40 and we managed to get for£20 last week, real bargain)
