Botox, how do you decide who to go with!?

Hoochyhoo · 22/12/2021 18:00

I’ve had two separate consultations.
One runs a local aesthetic place. The other is a doctor at a fairly local practise.

Does going with a doctor automatically mean they’ll do a better job?!

Any other things to look out for?

@Notwithittoday

For me there was only one person in the whole of my area that uses the original Allergan Botox. Everyone else was using other cheaper brands which don’t work on me. Luckily the lady is also good at applying. I wouldn’t go with anyone who was not a medical professional though. Nurse, Dr or dentist only. There are too many beauticians doing Botox and fillers these days. It’s shocking.
I’d actually refine this further to doctor or dentist only. Nurses learn nothing about the facial muscles during the degree then just do a two day course!

Yikes, look at the top lip ridges! Not good.

My lady is an ex dentist. She has left dentistry to specialise in aesthetics full time rather than a side thing and now has her own clinic. She’s excellent and I feel confident in knowledge that not only is she medically trained by also knows the anatomy of the face due to dentistry.

She’s also listed in the Alice Hart Davies tweakment guide

@Thatswhatmamasaid

I'd find an aesthetic doctor OP who does it day in, day out. Agree with PP that Botox is prescription only, how is the beautician getting it? You might need to go further afield perhaps if there isn't someone like that locally. The lips on the beautician's FB page look way overdone 😲
Aesthetic doctor isn't a regulated term .

A GP with years of aesthetics experience could be fine , could be shit .

The top choice for me is some with;

  • medical qualification
  • significant good reviews / trust pilot reviews OR word of mouth recommendation
  • good before and afters
  • check their qualifications
  • check the products they are using

I personally use Secret Aesthetics clinic , doctor owned and ran - a LOT of great reviews and good artistic eye .

The doctor there is a Trauma doctor in the NHS so has a lot more complex needle work experience than a GP I imagine . I also feel very confident that he can deal with any side effects or if I faint because I'm a baby .

I can highly recommend Dr Anthony, she's a dentist but also specialises in aesthetics. She's got a few clinics around South Wales and I wouldn't go to anyone else!! www.anthonyaesthetics.co.uk

CinemaPantomime · 24/12/2021 00:53

I would only go with a Dr or dentist. Dentist does mine. IMO you need someone who has full training in all facial muscles.

I’ve never had anything done personally, but if I were to, I’d sure as heck not go to a 21 year old beautician, that’s completed a 2 week diploma in it.

There are a couple of shall we call them feckless yobs at my old school and I was stunned to find out they are now offering ‘aesthetic enhancements’ via fillers. Constantly see the photos of the bee sting trout pout they offer.

I wouldn’t go to either of those if it was free!

Definitely a medical professional

I worked with a couple of women who were open about what they'd had done. I was able to observe the work up close, when they were speaking, emoting, at rest, etc. It looked really good so I went with their woman (an aesthetician, not a doctor) and I've not looked back, my botox has been so subtle that not even my mum, sister, or best friend could tell I'd had anything done!

Well she was saying that apparently she doesn’t need to advertise much as most of her clients are from word of mouth. Her own work she’s had done is overdone in my opinion but I guess that’s her own choice x

I’m definitely leaning more towards the GP I think 👨‍⚕️ x

Do all GP have training in facial muscles or is it something certain doctors learn? X

Avoid! Avoid!

Rocaille · 24/12/2021 10:40

I'd be especially cautious about fillers because of the risk of vascular occlusion. I'd want to know the injector had a plan for avoiding it, and responding if the worst happened.

Thatswhatmamasaid · 24/12/2021 15:41

OP, is finding someone in Cardiff a possibility for you? I imagine there will be plenty of reputable aesthetic doctors for you to choose from in a big city....

I've had terrible BOTOX from a dentist and the same from one of the most lauded doctors in the UK. I've been going to a nurse for ages now and she's fantastic. Recommendation and research is your best bet.
CinemaPantomime · 25/12/2021 11:14

I don't know OP but they certainly have some training in all anatomy and muscles. Injections and avoiding hitting the wrong place with a needle are basics for them. Then they have the additional Botox training. They do that on top of their medical training. I think dentists probably have most training in facial muscles unless it's a specialist Doctor. It's a case of researching and my own dentist does aesthetics now. I'd trust her. More and more do aesthetics now.

Hoochyhoo · 27/12/2021 13:31

Thanks everyone. Still really anxious about who to go with and don’t know anyone who’s personally had it done to ask them. I will do a bit more research tho. X
