Cheap and cheerful but do the job for skin care

I’ve run out of all bits & bobs for skincare (used the supply up and haven’t been buying anything)

I’m mid 30’s and want some cheap and cheerful recommendations for a moisturiser, exfoliating scrub, and anything else you think I might need for dry sensitive skin. Gone are the days of Clinique, liz earl etc

I’m literally a scrub once a week and use a moisturiser daily (rarely make up - even tho I hoard the stuff) but I need a better routine - can anyone share one? It needs to be quite quick as I don’t have lots of time on an morning but plenty on an evening.

I’ve also noticed quite a few fine lines around my eyes

Any help much appreciated

Ponds cold cream cleanser

I’ve been through numerous skin care regimes - expensive and not. My skin has never been better than right now. I use nivea blue cream at night to cleanse with a hot flannel then use it to moisturise. Then I clean my face in the morning with a hot flannel then use simple moisturiser. That’s it.
It’s cheap :)

Superdrug Vitamin E

DobbyTheChristmasHouseElf · 22/12/2021 22:17

When you say you use Nivea blue creme do you really mean the stuff that comes in the dark blue pot?? @twolittleboysonetiredmum

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 22/12/2021 22:20

Yup the horribly thick white stuff. It’s about £4 for a big tub. It’s weird as you have to totally dry your face before you can apply as a moisturiser but it’s been really great for my skin. Never get breakouts or have greasy/dry skin any more. Maybe I’ve just been lucky - who knows. But I struggled with combination skin a lot before

I love the body shop drops of light peel (I'm also hoping Santa is listening!) but daily I use Asda's own range of eye makeup remover, toner, day and night cream - they're all £1 each, and then I use a face wash (usually a branded one around £3-£4) and I think they're fab! Cheap and cheerful and get the job done Smile

Superdrug Naturally Radiant. Cheap and cruelty free.

frugalkitty · 22/12/2021 23:20

Another vote for Aveeno cream from me, my skin loves it. Also the Nivea products are good, I like the sensitive cleanser and day/night creams and also the Q10 day creams (they do a fragrance free one now too). Vitamin E hot cloth cleanser from Superdrug is a good replacement for Liz Earle. I think Superdrug is a really good place to start for good, budget products plus they're own ranges are cruelty free if that's a factor for you.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 22/12/2021 23:24

I think Superdrug Naturally Radiant or Aldi Lacura are the best budget choices.

Simple scrub
Lidl Q10 day cream and Q10 serum

Sukin. Can always get on offer in either Boots or Holland and Barrett. Great for sensitive skin.

Tr1skel1on · 22/12/2021 23:29

Another vote for old fashioned Nivea in the dark blue pot. I've used it for years, I'm now 46 and have less wrinkles than a lot of my peers

Holbrook9 · 22/12/2021 23:31

Also, check out Caroline Hirons, she has great tips for essential quick skincare routines

Selok · 23/12/2021 00:23

I use No.7 products, my skin is very sensitive and doesn't like so much cosmetics I find No7 skin care very good and prices are good too

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/12/2021 00:35

The Inkey List and The Ordinary. Superdrug also have some amazing quality own brand ranges that are very reasonable.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 23/12/2021 00:36

Aldi Lacura Rejuvenist is good and not shiny/greasy, despite the high SPF (30). You can buy it online

The Ordinary squalane + retinol is relatively cheap.

Nip fab glycolic pads are a little more pricey, but often have promotions 3 for 2 etc. They really do brighten the skin.

I use this too. It's brilliant stuff
Wiredforsound · 23/12/2021 03:10

Another vote for dark blue Nivea, reached through a long process of trial and error. A big dollop on at night after washing my face with Simple face wash, and a smaller dollop in the morning after a shower. I have rosacea and sensitive skin and the only other thing I use on my face is Soolantra which has reduced the redness almost to nothing.

TheBugHouse · 23/12/2021 06:28

I love Nivea q10 and it’s always half price somewhere. It’s got a spf in it too. I’m currently using Aldi cavier cream which is really nice. There was a forum on money saving expert with all their copies of expensive copies.

FindingMeno · 23/12/2021 06:30

Simple and cerave are great if you have sensitive skin.

Geamhradh · 23/12/2021 06:37

You only "need"5 things for great skin according to Nadine Baggott:

A cleanser- goes down the sink after 30 seconds, any will do
A vit C - will give glow and protect during the day from pollution etc
A sunscreen
A hydrator- serum, hyaluronic acid, cream, whatever you like and at whatever price point you are ok with. Its job is to moisturise, something for £3 will do it just as well as something in a fancy box in a beautiful jar with an actress advertising it on prime time TV.
A retinol

If you want to add "extras" then an acid toner exfoliates and resurfaces in a gentler way than those horrific gritty scrubs of our teenage years used to. AHA for ageing, BHA for oily and blemish prone.

Superdrug do some brilliant ranges, Nivea etc have decades of R&D behind them.

The key is in the ingredients. My favourite acid toner for example is an Olay one and costs £5 and lasts about a year.

Ragwort · 23/12/2021 06:46

Nivea - I am over 60 and have used it all my life (once or twice splashing out on Clarins etc), I love it, no wrinkles, smooth skin etc Smile
