I don't understand eye masks

The ones people wear to sleep. I honestly don't know why I'm even thinking this could be a potential gift idea for myself because I don't even understand why they're a thing and people use them.

Are they to block out light? Because I have a blackout blind in my room and the light never wakes me up. Are they to prevent wrinkles? Because I used to sleep on my left side and I do have more fine lines under my eye on that side. Are they meant to just feel nice? I just can't get over the fact that people just look totally ridiculous wearing them lol

Saying all that this one did catch my eye because I often put on rain sounds on my iPhone to help me fall asleep and this one has built in headphones amzn.to/3mmT1Cp

Honestly haven't a clue why I'm suddenly intrigued with these 😂

I like the ones that block out all the light. Very helpful with neighbours annoying Christmas lights flashing on and off all night

MoreAloneTime · 20/12/2021 15:03

I've found using a light blocking one has improved my sleep significantly.

I like the disposable heated ones, they're really soothing for headaches/tired eyes or if you use a computer a lot

Ooh is that the space mask ones? They look good
NMC2022 · 20/12/2021 15:39

@Bubblty I get cheaper ones here

ABitOfAShitShow · 20/12/2021 15:45

I bought one on a whim because I have terrible insomnia and ex slept with a mask. It doesn’t help my sleep but it’s actually kind of nice and comforting. I can’t really explain it but my eyelids just kind of feel held shut. God, I’m not only no help but - typing that - I’m clearly a weirdo. Grin

I find it harder to fall asleep without it as if my eyes open I'm then distracted.

They are useful on flights or in hospital, otherwise I'm with you.

ABitOfAShitShow · 20/12/2021 17:37

Yeah @Bubblty and I feel like my eyes are sometimes a bit fluttery and not quite relaxed shut. I don’t even know if that makes sense…😂

broccolibush · 20/12/2021 17:54

I find the pressure on my eyes/face comforting and that helps me sleep. Kind of like a weighted blanket can help. It also helps me when I wake at night as I can’t open my eyes and see the time/DH/a random mosquito etc so I tend to not wake up as fully and can get back to sleep. I suffer from terrible insomnia though.

LadyJJ · 24/12/2021 21:26

I've got a blackout one I can open my eyes inside. Best 8 quid I ever spent.
I too enjoy the 'eyes held shut' sensation tho

I tried these out in Japan and have been addicted ever since. Really good for relaxation or easing off sinus pain.

Jinglebellsoncake · 25/12/2021 22:28

I use one as I'm very light sensitive. I grab it when the sun rises to block out the sun.
(So probably from 7am at the moment. But much earlier in summer)
I have always used once since a child

They block out all light, like those little LEDs that things have nowadays, gaps in blinds etc. Etc. Silk eyemasks will also prevent wrinkles as it doesn't cause friction as you move around.

They are good for your health for those two reasons but it's more pronounced when you don't have blackout blinds - for you taking it when you travel anywhere is probably where you would get most benefit. Silk eyemask on a flight or an overly light hotel bedroom is amazing ❤️
