If I pay £300 for a pair of ankle boots

What difference will I notice compared to my usual, which would be c. £120 max?

I've seen a pair I like in Russell and Bromley. Not exciting, mid height block heel ankle boots. Something I imagine I'd get lot of wear from.

I'm all for spending a bit more on something that will last and get a lot of use. Are these very different to cheaper shoes?

I’ve got several pairs which I am pleased with. I do think there is a difference in quality from cheaper boots, the linings are leather for example. You are also paying more as they are manufactured in Europe. I used to buy Hobbs shoes which were great back in 80s, they seem to all be made in India now.

I chucked out some Dune boots I'd worn regularly for 8 years this autumn, they were totally my favourite out of several pairs. If i had £300+ to spend I'd look at Penelope Chilvers.

On the subject of soles- what are the best design of boot to buy with future resoling in mind? Resoling chunky rubber soles is extremely non-cost-efficient I’ve found! I’m assuming plain leather soles are also expensive though. Is that the case?

I’m still wearing a pair of Gabor boots I got 12 years ago- I couldn’t wear them every day now as the sole seems a little bit weak, but the look of them (tan leather) has improved with age.

Look for some hand made British shoes they'll knock spots off R&B. Although Stuart Weitzman sandals are always a good investment.

I have some Cheaney ankle boots (approx £350) and they are hands down the best, most comfortable boots I've ever had. Cheaney do a refurb service as well for when the get worn out, but I wear them more days than not and they're nowhere near needing it. I've had them for three years. Since I got them I wouldn't think twice about investing in good handmade shoes.

Another thumbs up for Cheaney. Fantastic quality and made in the UK.

I also love Crockett & Jones. Again, fabulous quality and made in UK.

I definitely would not spend £300 on a pair of boots from Russell & Bromley when, for a similar price, I can get Cheaney or Crockett & Jones boots.

I wouldn't spend £300 on a pair of nondescript boots! They'd probably last longer to bore me and piss me off! I speak advisedly, as the 'curator' of upwards of 200 pairs of footwear (having sent a goodly number to a charity shop a couple of year ago!).

I tend to go for the independents, and the brands, like Marco Moreo, Marian, Bruno Premi, Lodi, Hispanitas, etc - Italian/Spanish brands. You can often find them well reduced on sites like Brandalley, yoox.com and zalandolounge.co.uk but you could also visit your local independent shoe retailer.
