Any hairdressers or people good with hair want to help me out

Hi

I have had every colour under the sun in my life. I get bored with my hair very easily. Before lockdown I went to a professional salon for colors and cuts every month. I'm now trying to save money and I'm pretty skint so I do my own hair with box dyes which I know is a sin. Over the last few months I have been dying my hair black. Its naturally mid brown. I have made sure to only do my roots so its not built up on the ends.

I put a semi permanent red on a few months back for a change but it didn't really do anything.

I have since just let my roots grow.

I really want to try go back lighter but without damaging my hair too much by using strippers etc

My hair is just at shoulder length.

What can I do with this?

Thanks

If you have been using permanent black then you can only strip out the colour with colour remover or bleach. Nothing lighter than black will show if you tint over it, hence the red not working.
Your other options are growing it or cutting it.
When clients come to me with this issue, I would probably suggest highlights using bleach to give the overall effect of a lighter colour. You could then use a dark or medium brown on your roots when they came through, smudging the colour down slightly to blend into the highlights.

@Vthirtyone thank you, sounds like a job for a hairdresser as my hair skills are limited.

If i was to use a hair stripper thing. Could i put that on then be able to dye over it the same day? How damaging is this? So if I stripped it would a light brown be best or possibly would a blonde work. Don't want to end up with orange hair. Id like to be dark blonde/light brown in the end.

Black stripped back to orange when I did it, you can then only go over with a light semi permanent brown otherwise it darkens again very easily. Realistically it was only going to a salon and over time using a low volume bleach that got my hair lighter again. Black is very hard to remove.

You will have to bleach your hair several times to lighten the black. The best tip I can give you if you are doing this yourself is to soak your hair in coconut oil before you bleach it. It won’t affect the bleaching process in any way other than to stop your hair getting so damaged. I would suggest buying good quality hair colour like koleston on eBay to use after bleaching. Choose a shade you like and buy the shade plus a bottle of developer. This will be better for your hair than cheap box dye. And afterwards, use more hair conditioner than you ever thought you would need. Another tip is to buy some cheap squeeze honey and slather it onto your hair along with conditioner. It softens the hair. In the supermarket you can buy avocado oil. Add a glug to your hair conditioner and this will also keep your hair well fed as you grow out the very colour treated parts.

I had my hair stripped from dark brown (cheap box dyes) before dying it a navy shade (a few years ago) it completely ruined my hair, the cheap box dyes before didn't help. The only way to fix my straw like hair after was to cut it off or grow it out. I now use the best dyes I can find, and preferably semi permanent ammonia free ones. Think long and hard before stripping all your hair.
