Bio Oil or something better?

I had a little surgery on my face and am planning ahead to try and keep any scarring to a minimum.

I hope that it will be a barely noticeable scar but it’s n case it isn’t what is the best oil/cream to use to help?

Bio oil is the obvious one but is there something better?

I had good results on a little scar from silicone sheets. Presumbly this wouldn't be a great option for daily wear for your face, but maybe something you could use overnight, then you can get silicone creams or gels for the day? Not used them though so not sure how it compares to bio-oil

I have had a lot of success healing wounds with medico eyes. Healing is much improved, lots of reviews on Amazon

Thank you for the replies.
I'll have a look into those options

Medical grade silicone gel.

Had cancer surgery on my face (10 stitches) earlier this year & plastic surgeon recommended silicone gel sheets from Amazon. Can barely see the scar now

Bio oil smells great but I don’t think it is any good for scars. Vague memories of a trial proving this.

How do they stay on your face?

My area might be too small but I can imagine they do work well

Bio oil is essentially mineral oil with some additives, so unlikely tondo more for you than rubbing in baby oil - I think it's the act of rubbing that helps, not so much what you rub it with.

SaltedCaramelPopcorn · 18/12/2021 10:39

The sheets are self adhesive so just stick by themselves! Comes in big sheets but you can just cut to size

I had recently had surgery to remove skin cancer, mine also in a very noticable spot. I asked my plastic surgeon about what to use on it for reducing the scar. She told me not to bother buying all these expensive oils that some PS sell, and to use anything oil based. The key thing is to be massaging in whatever you put on, it's the massaging technique rather than the product put on. The dressing she used directly after had a silicone gel in it, which stayed on for a week. Then after that I used mainly tissue oil, but she recommended good old Vaseline. So I have used the tissue oil, Vaseline or EA 8 hour cream. I just depends on the day, Vaseline I use mostly at night.

I am 6 weeks post op now and although the scar was a bit ugly at first, it is looking so much better.

The massaging is to avoid keloids which are quite common, but a bit of a pain to get rid of.

Your Dr should explain the massage technique but there are you tube videos as well.

My stitches are now out but it’s still a little scabby .

I think I’ll wait anther week before massaging any oil in as is also still tender and I’m a wuss

Silicone gel. Expensive but worth it, Ive had so many operations on my torso and scars from self harm and its really helped in minimising them.

Thank you Thankyou
Is there a particular brand you'd recommend? It's all new to me.. I barely use a moisturiser Smile

I had a skin tag removed (not on face) and the dr (dermatologist?) said NOT to use bio oil. Said it could actually make the scar worse! He said plain Vaseline. But I would check with your own dr as it’s face in case it’s different.

LadyEloise1 · 22/12/2021 09:49

La Roche Posay Cicaplast has very good results.
Also IS Clinical SHEALD is meant to be very good for healing scars, though I don't have personal experience of it.

Wimpling · 22/12/2021 10:01

I used the Dermatix silicone gel that you linked above on my small DS's facial scar. It was recommended on another Mumsnet thread and it was brilliant - made such a difference. The cut wasn't cleaned properly and became infected (thanks, A&E!), and the Dermatix got rid of the red bumpiness of the scar and made it smooth and white.

I'd use it again (hopefully won't have to!)

NMC2022 · 23/12/2021 01:21

Silicone scar gel/sheets are meant to be the best but honestly, time
I did nothing for this except no itching it, and if it felt dry/itchy I slapped on whatever cream was to hand. I had plans for vitamin e, silicone gel etc etc and well Grin
(I had a tattoo done in between but not over the scar, you can JUST see it)

lborgia · 23/12/2021 04:28

I used rosehip oil as a night moisturiser for several years, and was astonished at the way it healed and reduced scarring.

Get a small bottle of something organic (I think the ordinary have it), and use that.

Meanwhile, small note, do NOT use any kind of oil until the wound is seriously healing. You're much more likely to get an infection if you start too soon.

Libertynan · 23/12/2021 20:53

Thanks all

I’ve ordered some rosehip oil so will see how that goes
