So they’re basically plain, dark leggings that are super soft fabric so v. comfy.
Worn with nice boots and a cashmere jumper and a nice gilet (I’m all for warmth & comfort) to meet family friends in a lobby bar (not a posh one !) and was just told by my mum to get changed otherwise I couldn’t come.

Does it sound the mess she’s making out Sad

Sounds like a lovely outfit!

ThePlumVan · 15/12/2021 20:18

@Annoyedandirritated thanks I’d done my hair & makeup and thought I looked quite nice !

Apparently they showed my bum and weren’t appropriate. I’m a size 10 if it’s at all relevant, and 44 which I feel is very relevant, so I’ve not gone.

Sometimes, depending on the top, I think it looks like people have forgotten their skirt. Could it be that? Generational too maybe

SummaLuvin · 15/12/2021 20:28

This is so dependant on the leggings themselves, and without being too crude, the individuals body and the way the fabric pulls across the buttocks (bigger bum/hips mean the fabric is more stretched). Some fabrics are extremely exposing and really do need a longer top, others are sturdy enough that while form fitting they are not so revealing. I have seen ones where you can clearly make out the shape of each butt cheek and the crack - sadly you can't see your own arse properly and need to rely on advice of others, is your mum normally stuffy in terms of fashion or on it?

shouldistop · 15/12/2021 20:47

If you're wearing leggings then you should have your bum covered, unless you're doing sport. Thems the rules Grin

ThePlumVan · 15/12/2021 20:53

@WouldBeGood yes I know the look you mean - and it maybe looked a bit ‘too heavy’ Grin but certainly not obscene with the longing gilet and we’d be sitting down.”

@SummaLuvin yes very stuffy and controlling right through adolescence and into adulthood. Fabric is quite thick so not bum cheek visible but maybe knicker line visible without nonVPLs !

@shouldistop thems are definitely the rules but these are more like thick leggings - not the thin ‘contouring’ pants that you can see yesterday’s breakfast though - promise !!

You are 44. DO NoT let your mum dictate what you wear. Who is she to say you can't come to meet family friends?

ThePlumVan · 15/12/2021 21:15

@CallMeNutribullet yes she has spoilt nights out before over similar things. I don’t feel like going anyway once she’s made me feel so crap.

Yup. Doesn’t matter how thick the fabric is. Aside from jumper length the outfit sounds fine for the school run or dog walking but I wouldn’t wear it out for drinks.

LakeShoreD · 15/12/2021 21:23

Your mum doesn’t sound very nice though! It doesn’t matter what you were wearing, how bloody infantilising to be told to change or else you couldn’t come.

ThePlumVan · 15/12/2021 21:38

I had ‘obscene’ jeans too once and a jumper knit dress that left nothing to the imagination apparently. It was a polo neck with long sleeves but ‘too clingy’
I have zero confidence going out so very rarely go anywhere. I do not dress for attention in any way. Warm & comfy every time.
