Mask playing havoc with skin

Can anyone help?

I work in a school so am wearing a mask for the majority of the day. Never had brilliant skin but well controlled using Roche de Posay.

Since daily mask wearing the skin on my chin has just gone absolutely wild - deep nodules that are leaving dark marks when they go.

I’m fairly sure it’s mainly mask related as they calmed down over half term and when I had some time off through illness recently.

I’ve used surgical masks and cheap fabric ones, would a different fabric make a difference?

The disposable type feel unpleasant. I would go for pure cotton.

CatherinedeBourgh · 12/12/2021 22:23

I had the same, have now found a particular type of disposable mask which is better.

But it’s still not as good as no mask.

@CatherinedeBourgh
Do tell!

SophiesMummySaid · 12/12/2021 22:29

Get an FFP2- not only more effective but also sit off the face; and change it at lunchtime

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/12/2021 12:49

Nothing to tell, for no apparent reason if I buy the black masks at my local pharmacy (am abroad) I’m OK, with anything else I flare up!

OP, if you want a really good 3 layer cotton one, try Charles Tyrwhitt. They do them, realistically I think they're mens' but they're hugely adjustable, have a shaped nose with band and also a chin seat. They're by a LONG way the most comfortable ones I've found. Not cheap but buy 2, wash and rotate.

Bigfathairyones · 13/12/2021 12:56

Ok, so apparently they're all sold out....sorry, should have checked first.

sallywinter · 13/12/2021 14:37

Thanks everyone! Going to try a couple of options… will report back!

FF2 has helped my skin
The " cone" shape isn't as close to the skin but is more protective than others

AB Mask Plus is pretty good. It has changeable filters.

You also get sheet masks that sit under masks, maskne masques. Revolution and 111 skincare do them. They aren’t for everyday/all fay but could make things a bit easier for you.

Maybe also a serum with a bit of salicylic acid in it as part of your daily routine, just on the lower half of your face, might help!

Figroll16 · 14/12/2021 16:46

I change my masks daily and use clinisept spray -it's only thing that sorts my maskne out.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/12/2021 17:18

I’m waiting for a call off the drs for antibiotics for mine.

MrsFrisbyMouse · 14/12/2021 17:24

I've been using the linen ones from Plumo. They are quite expensive but wash really well and are very soft on my skin.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/12/2021 17:52

Well I’ve got 3 months of lymecycline and a ref to dermatology in the system.

nordica · 14/12/2021 17:59

I was going to mention FFP2 masks, too. Not only are they more protective for you and others, they are much more comfortable and easier to speak wearing one. I can wear lipstick under mine and it looks perfect when I take my mask off.

sallywinter · 14/12/2021 23:32

My FFP2 masks arrived today and I can confirm that they are much comfier and sit off from my skin. I’ve also ordered some silk backed ones.

Luckily I should have a few weeks off any prolonged mask wearing now but the damage is done for a while at least.
