Dressing gown, housecoat or robe?

What do you call it, and do you wear one?

I used to call it a dressing gown, but slowly changed over the years to call it a housecoat. I'm in Canada, so maybe it's regional.

I have a short, thin summer one, but do not own a warm one for winter. i have a old adidas track jacket that I put on over my pyjamas. It makes it easier to do dishes/chores before getting dressed.

I love my housecoat 😊
I also have a dressing gown

I would say bathrobe if it is a towelling fabric, but otherwise dressing gown. I use neither, I find a wool cardigan works fine and doesn't flop into everything.

A housecoat to me is a different thing:

@TopCatsTopHat apologies if you've already considered this and it won't work, but we hang our dressing gowns on hooks that just sort of hook over the top of the door rather than needing to make holes in things. Think they were a couple of quid from B&M.

I have two dressing gowns, a big fluffy one with a hood for winter and an elegant lightweight one for the summer because we have floor to ceiling windows in our living room and I like to have my weekend morning coffee on the sofa without flashing passers by. I suppose the latter could be referred to as a robe, but I don't.

I wonder if the housecoat name for it is regional? It is fairly common in central Scotland to refer to what I call a dressing gown as a housecoat

I think quite possibly. I wasn’t quite as far north, but growing up in my corner of Yorkshire they were definitely called housecoats. They were often fastened with buttons rather than a flappy belt though, and so were a little like the housecoats that other people associate with either glamorous 1950s housewives, or, interestingly at the other end of the social scale, the garments that Dot Cotton or Nora Batty wore for cleaning. But they were worn over pyjamas and after baths, and so very much the same animal as a dressing gown or bathrobe.

Where I am in Scotland it’s a housecoat, or a goonie (more of an uh sound than an ooo) Grin although me and dd call it a dressing gown which drives dh mad.

To me this is a housecoat.

"To me a housecoat are the thin checked things worn to protect clothes like dot cotton wore in the launderette. My Nan used to see one for doing housework."

My gm called that her 'brat'.
I look awful in dressing gowns. It took me a long time to figure out why, but now I think it's because I have a thick waist so something that ties in the middle just makes that worse, but would be flattering on someone with a smaller waist. I wear a hoody jacket over my pjs.

Must be a Canadian thing to call them housecoats or bathrobes, whether it is toweling, fleece or silky kimono or caftan. A garment to wear before getting dressed.

In on-line stores, they fall under ' robes'.

@MrJollyLivesNextDoor

Housecoat is a thin polyester type garment worn by ladies of previous generations to protect their clothes whilst cleaning isn't it?

Bathrobes are generally white and heavy and found in hotel rooms

Dressing gowns are soft and fluffy and worn over pyjamas at home

Not sure what a silky item to be worn over sexy underwear would be called - a robe I suppose? Non existent in my house 🤣

Exactly my thoughts. Couldn't have put it better in fact Grin
