Shrinking disaster. Can anyone find this cardigan?

I bought such a lovely cardigan in a vintage clothes shop, I lovingly hand washed it and made the error (how many times have I done this and never bloody learnt!) of putting it in the washing machine to rinse and spin (on the lowest possible spin of 400). It's shrunk to oblivion.
I've tried soaking in conditioner and blocking but I think it's too far gone. I know it isn't the end of the world - I've had enough 'end of the world' moments to know but .... it was 'that' cardigan that I'd had in my head and I was pleased to have found it. And then I killed it. I didn't even wear the bloody thing. I shouldn't have washed it.
It's kind of a Cowichan style but it was much looser and softer, if that makes sense.
I've tried searching Google using the label but it just brings up somewhere in America. It has another label on the inside seam in Chinese/Japanese (I'm not clever enough to know the difference) so I assumed it was mass produced but it possibly was hand knitted from a pattern.
Could anyone help me find it? Or possibly the pattern for it? Or knit it?

Going to need a photo to have any chance OP!

Maybe if you post a photo of it & of the labels someone could track one down for you.

Disappointing for you, such a shame.

Amelion · 07/12/2021 19:26

A picture of it, and the label, would definitely help!

Of shit! I'm so sorry! I thought I'd added the bloody photo. I'll do it now. I'm bloody useless.

This is the label - just realised you can't see it in the photo I posted.

Thank you blisstwins I'll have a look at that website, the 'sun and wave' one is very similar but $248!! Shock. My shrunken disaster was only £8!

Patterns on Etsy

And some jumpers/cardigans. Not for £8 though!

blisstwins · 08/12/2021 17:20

I know. The prices are intense.

TonytheDog · 08/12/2021 21:41

Thank you IAmHereForTheFood - there are some lovely patterns on there. I wish I could knit properly - there's a brilliant 70's brown number with orange zig zags that I'm particularly partial to.

That's lovely FunnyName00 thank you, I'd never heard of 'All About Audrey'.

I'm currently soaking bad cardigan in a tub of conditioner. I know it's useless but I thought I'd give it one last go.

Thank you for all the help - I might try and knit one from the Etsy link that blisstwins linked to.

I’d try ironing it on a low ish setting when it’s damp to see if you can relax and stretch out the fibres… as a last resort. Do it on the inside.

ConfusedParticle · 09/12/2021 01:34

oh god love i am sorry, it doesnt matter what you spend, a loved item is priceless.

if it was me, i would handwash anything i was uncertain about from now on.
love is love.

i like brora for fairisle/pattern but god is it pricey.

Branster · 09/12/2021 11:20

Can you try pulling it in all directions whilst still wet and see if it stretches enough to fit.
You might need to do that after every wash though.
It happened to me too! With a stunning scandinavian wool jumper it's sooo beautiful and quite unusual and modern, a charity shop find that would otherwise be expensive and I don't even think you can buy it online or in the UK. I stretched it in the end, took a lot of patience, tears and giggling.

TonytheDog · 09/12/2021 21:50

Thank you Journey, I hadn't thought of an iron! I've no idea where my iron is but I'm going to hunt it down and try that - although the wool feels quite felted and beyond going back. I will try.
Confused, in my head I'm 'oh be so very careful with this one' and then in the moment I bloody forget and think this one'll be fine! I've washed so many jumpers that shouldn't have survived - that have survived. But others that should have bit ended up like doll's jumpers. I did decide a few years ago to have a 'kill or survive' policy which worked quite well. Until ..... I killed my favourite cardigan. Ahhh. I'm going to go and find an iron.
Branster I've tried that and at first I thought it was working - I even pulled and stuffed it with pillows and left it to air dry overnight in its own special place but by the morning it had turned itself to cardboard. I've left it on the side of the bath to see if it wants to magically go back to its normal size and I'm sure it's glowering at me and silently saying 'why the bloody hell did you decide to rinse me in the machine? I'm going to sit here shrinking until you find a solution or give me to a 5 year old who likes very rigid cardigans!'

I did that to a lovely jumper, so I turned it into a cushion cover. It looks great Xmas Grin
