Curling wand for numpties? My photo inside

Hello, I have just taken my photo on the train on way to Xmas do, and my hair already looks shocking. I spent 40 mins curling it using mousse, spray and a tong thing but it's already dropped.

Can you recommend, please, what sort of contraption I should use? Tong, wand, air wrap? I'd like curls not be achy waves. Thank you!

You need to curl wet to dry if its stubborn. There's lots of methods, but I find pin curls tend to give the best hold (last a week on my waist length hair) if left in overnight. Bonus, it avoids heat damage. You also need to protect from any damp in the atmosphere with a hood while outside to avoid the drop, though moisture repellent sprays help with that too.

I've never thought of styling from wet. You could be right.

Curl formers might help. Put them in over night.
Try a chopstick curling wand for tighter curls that way when they drop you’ll still have curls just wider.
I’d avoid the mousse as it will make your hair heavier. Curl then spray.

Some people hair does just struggle to hold a curl, you might be one of them. But this what works for me.

I use a curing wand, babyliss, so nothing fancy. I curl in fairly small sections, hold for probably 5 seconds, then let the curl drop into my hand and hold it in my palm for a further few seconds to cool in place before letting it fall and moving onto the next curl. Once I have completed half a head I spray fairly liberally with hair spray. Repeat with second side. It will be crunchy and poodle-y at this point. Then I do make up, or get dressed, or lounge for at least 15 minutes to allow it to sit and completely cool before finger combing it out to soften the curls and remove the crunchiness. I sometimes add a little hair oil at this point to add shine and remove fly aways. I find with this method I can curl my hair on a Friday morning and have it last until Sunday (though obviously the curls loosen over the weekend).

Final note this is the heat protectant I use, I don't know if it being an Elnett product helps my curls hold in addition to the hair spray, it does say for straight but I use it for both as I only have one heat protectant in at a time and it seems to work fine for curls too.

Thanks to all the suggestions. I'm going to try and report back.

You've the same hair as me

I only curl it once it's dry - so there's no point washing and curling on the same day, it's too fresh and it drops out

So I only curl second day hair

Naughtylittleflea · 08/12/2021 17:31

My hairdresser told me that hair has memory - if you make sure you curl regularly like once a week or two it goes and stays in much better

Babyliss curl secret- the gizmo that sucks your hair up and it comes out in a curl. I use the professional one where you can adjust the temperature and the length of time it holds your hair for. Works like a charm! That and a shitload of hairspray. I never do it on freshly washed hair though.

Wands never worked for me and I never got the knack of doing it with straighteners.

Babyliss curl secret

My hair never ever held a curl but this works

PinkArt · 09/12/2021 00:42

Mine holds a curl much better if I use straighteners rather than tongs or a wand. And better still if I curl then pin the curl to my head while it cools down.

Another fan of the curl secret, curls last days.

Maflingo · 09/12/2021 10:15

Yes, either curl wet, the night before and take the curls out in the morning; or curl on hair washed the day before (not freshly washed)
Either way, some kind of styling spray when creating the curl, and a load of hairspray to set the curl will also help!
