Lymecycline and weight

Hi! I know there are already several threads on lymecycline but reviews are very mixed. I’ve just started it, currently day 3, as I’m late twenties and still never without several annoying spots (not bad enough for accutane). Antibiotics are a last resort really as I’ve tried what feels like every skincare brand under the sun including benzoyl peroxide. Also tried cutting down on dairy, sugar, taking vitamin E and cod liver oil.
My biggest worry is effect on weight, I’ve heard horror stories about low dose antibiotics and huge weight gains!

In your packet there should be a leaflet which lists a lot of information about your prescription. It will tell you what it is, what it's used for plus side effects.

I was on lymecycline for a couple years, never saw any difference to my weight. Didn't do too much for my skin either unfortunately, well not permanently, every time I tried to stop it my skin flared up. Only roaccutane worked for me.

I’ve never heard this said before. You’ve got a skin infection, antibiotics should be the first line treatment. No one with any other infection gets told to avoid dairy 😂 “you’ve got sepsis here’s some zinc and almond milk”

I took accutane, it’s for cystic acne or acne that doesn’t respond to antibiotics. It slows down oil production that feeds the bacteria.

Seems for most people it doesn’t really work long term!! I have between 3 to 8 spots on both sides of my face at all times. Could be a lot worse but still knocks your confidence especially when they are angry! But I don't think they are bad enough for accutane…

Oh no I'm due to start these in a few days. Please don't tell me weight gain is a side affect. I already have an underactive thyroid, and thyroid antibodies 😭

MrsPleasant · 05/12/2021 18:16

DD takes it, her acne is quite bad. No weight gain at all.

confusednortherner · 05/12/2021 18:45

Ds 13 has been on them 6 weeks now. No weight gain and some improvement in spots that were very angry across shoulders and neck.

Myshitisreal · 05/12/2021 18:51

That's good to know. I'm going on it for hidradenitis suppurativa so a kind of acne i guess.

Op have you started it already?? Hope you're good

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/12/2021 19:12

Who the hell starts these rumours? Antibiotics make you fat 😂

How would they do that? Loads of other drugs do but if you need them it’s non-negotiable & your just glad to be treated.

Only day 3! For 3 months. Not feeling hopeful it will be a miracle though!!

Two of my kids were on it for years as teenagers. Neither put an ounce on in weight. It's a low dose antibiotic not an antispsychotic!

It works too :)

pcofmushu · 06/12/2021 02:00

There is no such thing as a pill that makes you gain weight. It might be that the medication increases your hunger/slows your metabolism, which subsequently results in weight-gain. But the med itself will not/does not cause you to gain weight.

I was on Lymecycline for acne for about 8 months, it worked well but it gave me v bad stomach pains so I had to stop taking it! I did not gain weight on this medication.

lborgia · 06/12/2021 06:40

You may mock the idea that antibiotics can make you fat, but actually, from a chemistry point of view, this isn't wildly unlikely.

Your levels of ghrelin, and leptin, and metabolism in general, is impacted by your gut microbiome.

Therefore, if you take a drug that essentially batters a large number of the microbes in your gut, that could impact on your metabolism.

Not all patients, not all antibiotics, but entirely possible.

The “for years” bit makes me a bit anxious Sad I don’t think I’m prepared to be on it for years!! I’ve got 12 weeks worth so I guess I’ll see where I’m up to after that!!

Thank you for your informative reply! Of course, I know the actual tablets themselves wouldn’t cause weight gain and rather it would be how they affect the body. I’ve been on several contraceptive pills some of which make you feel starving 24/7 so it’s not hard to see how that kind of weight gain happens!

Give them a go OP and if they don't work get a referral to a dermatologist who can prescribe roaccutane, not a light decision but statistically much more likely to be a permanent solution.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/12/2021 11:44

In real life though do antibiotics make you fat? Dh is on doxycycline for life with no weight gain, his beta blockers on the other hand have caused weight gain but if he doesn’t have them he’ll be on a cardiology ward or cardio converted.

The tetracyclines don’t usually affect the bowel or vaginal bacteria in the way the penicillins do. Flucloxacillin badly affected me for months but capsules of probiotics got me back to normal.

The progesterone in contraceptives does make you hungry same as mirtazapine makes you ravenous. I have a vague memory progesterone makes you retain water too.
