A hoodie that lasts?

fedup078 · 03/12/2021 07:18

I don't want to spend a fortune as I generally just wear them in the house but I want one that lasts more than a couple of washes
Think my last one came from Dorothy Perkins and went very bobbly after 2 washes
Is there a hoodie that will survive a few washes without looking totally worn out or is this just part and parcel of the material ?

False economy to buy a budget one as cheap jersey does bobble. Better to look at a brand like super dry. They don't all have loud logos, some are plain and v discreet. Mine is around10 years old and still looks fab despite being very pale grey so needing frequent washes. Dd has adopted it now so still gets worn weekly

I have a fat face one from YEARS ago, which is still as smooth and soft as the day I bought it. Love it. Often theirs have slogans or big logos on, but this one was very understated and just one plain colour. We live in a terrible water area, and despite our hard water, this hoodie is always still soft.

Jack wills on the other hand, always seem to bobble. I have bought a few of them secondhand, and they all arrive bobbled, so I shave the bobbles off, but they certainly aren't like the fat face one.

Weirdly I once had an excellent, cheap primark one, but it was a thin material so not warm enough for what I wanted it for. My sister who lives in a warmer place adopted it.

If you're wanting cheap, check out vinted, depop or eBay (but not eBay, because I've gone off ebay after a run of weird, unreliable sellers!).

Lululemon!!
Wear really well, look fab and super comfy.

Strugglingtodomybest · 03/12/2021 07:27

There will be loads in the charity shops if you don't want to spend much, I got a Dickies one for £9.50 last week.
We have loads of hoodies in this house, none are bobbly, brands include Nike, Champion, Everlast, Dickies, Superdry, Saltrock, Animal, Hager Vor, Fox.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 03/12/2021 07:32

My Patagonia hoodie is well over 5 years old and still going strong.

I have a lovely one from gap, my husband has two of the same and wears them non stop. They look great. No logo either (I’m not a fan of the huge gap logo across me!) Loads of different colours. Called something like gap vintage brushed cotton.

WhoppingBigBackside · 03/12/2021 07:51

I have a Uniqlo one that I've had for about 20 years. Not bobbled or faded

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/12/2021 08:00

A well made cotton sweatshirt / hoodie should last many decades. Probably your whole life and more if you only wear it in the house.

Have a look on eBay for the brands mentioned above. Or community clothing do ace sweatshirts made in the Uk (a good bit more expensive than eBay though..)

Thanks everyone

I have two Superdry Luxe which are excellent quality with no logos
I also have a second hand plain Fat Face one which I've had for years

2pointfourmonkeys · 03/12/2021 15:35

To go against the grain, i have a matalan one that i have washed most weeks for a year and it is still in good condition.

Washing it inside out has helped x

Nat6999 · 03/12/2021 15:58

I have one from Elsie's Attic it is the thickest one I have ever had & has cuffs that have thumb holes in to keep your hands warm, I have worn it every day during 3 winters & it still looks like new.

lindyloo57 · 03/12/2021 16:36

I have two ( I should of brought one) from H&M but I only wear them now and again both bobbled badly after only two or three washings

CailleachBan · 03/12/2021 16:43

Main thing is to make sure they are 100% cotton with no polyester as that’s what created the ‘balls’!

Mercurial123 · 03/12/2021 17:28

I have one from Brooks for running. I've had it for years. It's indestructible.

Isitreallyme177 · 03/12/2021 19:42

Mine are all superdry, they wash well too. I tend to wear them to the gym and they keep me warm.

FurrFeather · 03/12/2021 20:22

Can't bear the polyester addition. M&S do this to nearly all their sweatshirts/hoodies and I can feel it in a squeemish sorta way!

I'm also on the lookout for a plain black cotton hoodie - not too thick, not too thin. Thasall! I know Superdry do good quality - but tends to be very thick and usually only up to a small 16 and sometimes too many logos.

StiltonIsLife · 03/12/2021 20:47

Vote for Gap here as well. There's always some sale on as well.

DukkaDukka · 03/12/2021 21:15

I like my Jack Wills hoodie, I wash it on a 30 or delicate wash and it stays lovely. It’s really thick and warm too.

AnnieSnap · 04/12/2021 00:57

I really think this is one of those situations where the phrase “Buy cheap by twice (or in this case several times) is true. The difference between a £29 hoodie and a £90 hoodie is that you will still be wearing the £90 one in 8/10 years time. The £29 will look goodish for a season. I highly recommend Sweaty Betty or Baukjen, which are £80/£90 if you get them in the sale. They are also organic cotton which is much better for the environment.

strawberrydonuts · 04/12/2021 04:04

I have a Superdry hoodie, just a plain zip through one without a logo. It was great at first but has actually bobbled now and looks faded. I've only had it about 4 months and washed a handful of times.

Surprised to see all the mentions on here for Superdry, because although lovely at first I don't think it is that great and might even replace it soon with something better.

I have a Mantaray one I bought 6 years ago which still looks new.

DinosaurOfFire · 04/12/2021 04:09

I have a Primark mens zippy one, and a H and M mens zip hoodie (I am a woman, but prefer the fit of the mens ones). The Primark one is a year old and still looks good, and the H and M ones are maybe 4 years old? And not bobbled. Whereas I have bought womens ones in the past that bobble and go out of shape really quickly. My hoodies are both plain, simple shapes, and cost about £15 each.

Smorgasborb · 04/12/2021 05:43

LuLuLemon. Definitely. Around £80 but it's going to last forever. Plus it has snorkel hood, inner pockets for phones, zippy pockets, dual way zips and a spare hair tie on the zip!

I didn't know this - thank you! Smile
