What do you do with your hair in your mid to late 50s?

Not thinking so much of style, but care. I've noticed that now that I have (most definitely) hit my mid to late 50s, my hair is really starting to fall out. What can I do to stop this? All tips or suggestions gratefully received!

Minoxidil 5%
Toppik to help camouflage and texturized etc for volume

My hair is starting to think every day I find long wavy hair around things. I'm happy enough at the moment because I have ridiculously thick hair.

OldTotty · 02/12/2021 19:29

I am mid fifties with fine blonde hair but lots of it. I eat fish, nuts and banana. All good for hair. I don't blow dry everyday but I do wash it everyday as it can go greasy.

I take biotin supplements. They seem to help.

Iron tablets
There's a shampoo designed for 'menopause hair' in a green bottle. I found it helped a lot when I was losing shed-loads of hair a couple of years ago.

I accept it pretty much! What choice?

The only concession I make is that I use high quality, non-sulphates silver shampoo and conditioner. This makes a difference and stops my hair looking too dried out. I only wash about every 4 days or so, I'd leave it longer if I could.

I keep my hair medium length for the same reason. Sometimes I put it up with a clip

I think the silver/grey can look very nice when my hair is in good condition. I add a few ash blonde highlights / lowlights at the hairdressers sometimes - but to be honest this dries my hair too! And I kind of prefer the grey. Decisions, decisions!

p.s. my hair is quite fine and has got finer in recent years. I think those with thick hair are so lucky!

LightSpeeds · 02/12/2021 20:59

I'm having the same problem. I'm 55 and my hair is very fine and falling out all over the place (some days it looks like most of it is on the carpet).

It doesn't help that there is female-pattern baldness in the family so I'm expecting things to get a lot worse...

Cocolapew · 02/12/2021 21:42

Mines short atm and I'm grey. The main problem I have is it's so bloody greasy! Also if I grow it a bit and you see a parting you can see my scalp too much.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/12/2021 21:45

I don't let my hair get too long , past shoulder length it pulls on my scalp.
It just sits in my shoulder , I can tie it back.

I don't blowdry or use heat (lazyness really)
Don't dye it , I'm accepting grey

I use a flexible silicone brush
Shampure or BodyShop Ginger

I am loathe to try supplements or shampoos

JessicaPipsqueak · 02/12/2021 21:46

I use Davines products and wash it 3 times a week instead of every day. I also have a very few taped extensions in as it's so fine

I'm considering next year biting the bullet and having a bespoke wig made. My hair is below my shoulders but rubbish without the extensions so my vague plan is to have a wig made up

Boitin, collagen and cod liver oil supplements.
Wash once a week and use deep conditioning mask then coconut oil on the ends.
Air dry then heatless style using rags, rollers or pin curls over night.
Sleep in a silk scarf every night and style lasts till next wash.

I'm about to turn 54... have the longest hair I have ever had.. half way down my back ! Still thick (and streaked with grey ..gave up colouring 5 years ago). I've been told not to cut it by all my family .
For work it's plaited or loosely tied back as I work with small children. Otherwise it's loose. I do blow dry it otherwise it takes a day to dry, but rarely use ghds.
I'm mid menopause but guess I'm lucky as it's not thinning yet!

FurrFeather · 04/12/2021 02:03

Just to add, my hair is both greasy and dry unless it’s conditioned in a certain way, hard to get the balance right!!!

Also my hair did start falling out around age 53 for a couple of years, and then reached some kind of plateau - though overall it’s still thinner of course.

I use this brand from NZ. My hair has thinned out alarmingly but it’s in great condition. I have been using the ph corrector and the intense moisturising conditioner.

53 and long thick slightly wavy hair, it's mid back length. I'm finding it had to cope with and may have it cut just below shoulders. It's so thick and coarse and heavy.

I wear it in a pony tail most if the time and at work as I'm in catering. Also wondering if I'm maybe a bit old too have it so long.......

Monty27 · 04/12/2021 06:45

I've stopped making a fuss about colour and treating it with kindness.
No more peroxide or bleach doing roots etc and have embraced the lovely natural colour achieved from a natural brunette to a silver blonde bombshell which I put the odd toner on to brighten me it up and treat it with kids gloves. Very regular haircuts too.
Condition cut and repeat
