Warm winter coat

Hi I am looking for a really warm winter coat. I don’t wear wool, fur or down and would like something knee length, maybe slightly below. Ideally in navy or dark grey. I want something smart which will work just as well for lunch out as it would in muddy dog walks
I don’t have a particular budget on mind but around £150- £250. I have seen great reviews of Seasalt Janelle coat but I just don’t like it personally. Find it a bit dull and shapeless. Want something more fitted that nips in at the waist.
Does such a thing exist? I cannot find anything online so far so thought I would ask here. Thank you

Have you looked at Didriksons? They're lovely and warm, great for dog walking too. Lots of different styles too.

Nordstrom · 01/12/2021 22:18

I just bought the Didrikson Emilia parka (not as nipped at the waist as the one I linked). It's my second Didrikson and is amazingly warm! I feel invincible in it

EssexLioness · 01/12/2021 22:31

Thank you, had a look at Didriksons but not a fan of any of them. I like trenchcoats (although too cold for those now), so I think I want something still with that sort of structure

Just found a couple I like from Phase Eight. Does anyone have any experience of how warm their padded coats are?

I would say Phase Eight won’t be properly warm - they’re fashion coats rather than technical coats. For proper warmth I’d look at more outdoorsy places - I recently got a coat from Swedish brand Elvine which is really warm - and they don’t use any down or fur. Or try Parka London, my coat from there is really warm and again no down or animal materials.

EssexLioness · 01/12/2021 23:31

Thank you. My problem is I only like the look of fashion coats, rather than technical wear. Might have to keep my old dog walking coat and just get a nicer coat for everything else.

@EssexLioness I've just bought a lovely Barbour quilted coat

EssexLioness · 04/12/2021 11:52

@hellololabells2019 thank you, I will take a look

You need a Collectif Pearl Coat! They don’t get more nipped in than that. British Retro also have some beautiful coats.

EssexLioness · 04/12/2021 20:50

Off to have a look. I have a couple of dresses from Collectif so not sure why I didn’t think of them already!

Not sure it’s included, but try using the code CM50. I’m sure one of the styles was included in the sale.

@@P0gM0Th0in thank you! 😊

It sounds like you want the look of a proper wool coat without any wool content but that still keeps you warm? Tbh I think that’s going to be very difficult to find. Cotton would be useless in that style and far too heavy. Polar fleece works ok but looks cheap. Technical outdoors wear always uses some kind of waterproof of water resistant outer layer and then a polyester (or down) filling for warmth. This works very well for warmth but it’s not the look you want. What kind of temperatures/weather conditions do you need it for?
I respect your ethics and decision not to wear animal derived fibres. But it’s severely limiting your fashion choices here. How do you feel about recycled wool or 2nd hand woolen coats? That might be a good way to go if your ethics allow.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 05/12/2021 10:01

That collectif coat is 30% wool.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 05/12/2021 10:12

Another technique you could try is to buy a properly waterproof trenchcoat in a style you like, and accept that yoi’ll need to pair it with a really warm zip up fleece inside (or a properly thick 2nd hand wool jumper if you decide you’re ok with that ethically). Something like this maybe? www.aigle.com/uk/en/p/obestew-N328_bosquet.html
Plus a properly warm technical fleece under it, for example :

Actually this one would potentially work really well with a long trench over. The long line would give a smoother look than a fleece that stops at the hip: www.columbiasportswear.co.uk/p/womens-archer-ridge-sherpa-long-jacket-1958603.html?dwvar_1958603_color=191&pos=13

Tbh, this is the conclusion I have come to. Nice looking coats just aren't warm ime. I have a wool type coat from Monki (it is actually recycled polyester iirc), which I wear to look nice. If I'm worried I'll be cold, I wear thermals and a jumper underneath. If I'm worried I'll get rained on I bring an umbrella.

For walks, I wear a different, technical coat which keeps me warm and dry and looks....OK. it doesn't look nice though. I honestly think nice looking warm coats just don't exist!

Any idea what the sizing is like for the collectif coats? I'm utterly in love 😍
EssexLioness · 05/12/2021 18:20

Thank you! I know I am limiting my choices due to ethics. So often I see a lovely coat or jumper and it has a small percentage of wool in. So frustrating!

I have found one from John Lewis that seems to fit the bill. Ordered it and should arrive later this week.

@MrsLarry I find they are true to size, if you are an hourglass shape. I think a lot of 50s repro shops are like that though.

@EssexLioness I only skim read the original post, sorry about that. I missed the bit about wool. Apologies!

EssexLioness · 05/12/2021 21:31

@P0gM0Th0in no worries! 😊
