And if so...what do you colour your hair with?

Can't believe how grey I am, and it's all at the front really!

have been grey since I was about 19. Hasn;'t spread too much thank god, but defo gray at the sides. I've used all sorts, but permanent rather than wash out. I like the two stage kits, where you put a colour on first then highlight it.

my hairdresser puts very fine blonde highlights through my brown hair, hides the worst of them temporarily and the roots don't look so obvious.

ItWasOnlyAWintersTellus · 17/12/2007 12:58

I am completely grey, or would be if I didn't get it coloured. I have it done at the hairdressers. I started going grey at 16 and was completely grey by my mid twenties .

BrieVinDeAlkaSeltzer · 17/12/2007 13:01

I got my first grey hair at 12

I am naturally brunette, but I went blonde at 40, my hair grows very very quickly so I constantly had a train track of grey down the middle. Now no one notices, I have it done every six weeks.

SeaShells · 17/12/2007 13:04

I'm 28 in a week and have had a small amount of grey since my early 20's but this past year, I've developed a huge grey streak at the front! I now have no choice but to dye it (don't feel I want to go gracefully grey just yet - have a young face - I stil get asked for ID sometimes which is very odd )I use the regular dyes like l'oreal etc, they are generally good for covering the grey.

sparklesandwine · 17/12/2007 13:05

gosh thats early

I noticed my first grey hairs just before my 30th birthday earlier this year (i blame the kids ) but get my hair coloured at the hairdressers now!

Wuxiapian · 17/12/2007 13:54

I'm 30 in a few months and have more than a few grey hairs!

I used to pull them out, but now I leave them. Decided I shall grow old gracefully. Besides, I couldn't be doing with the faffin' about with dyeing every couple weeks!

I have a young face, but even with the grey people still ask for my ID!

LadySanders · 17/12/2007 13:59

going blonder helps if you're fair, i never really noticed mine too much til i went back to natural brunette 3 years ago (i'm 34). mine are not just grey, they are crinkly and rather, ahem, pubic, unlike my natural rather nicely glossy hair. i use nice n easy, every 8 weeks or so, though hairdresser tells me off and says its bad for hair (possibly cos that costs £2.79 in boots whereas getting it done at hairdresser would be i guess 50 quid plus... hmmmmm)

LoveAndSqualor · 17/12/2007 14:04

I've had the odd gray hair since my mid-20s (dark brunette normally), and have noticed more since pregnancy (no surprise there ...!) I get my hair coloured fairly regularly at the hairdressers' (a sort of richer dark brown) but tbh the colour tends to slide off the gray hairs after a while (plus, the grays are much more wiry than my normal hair, so draw attention to themselves anyway). My hairdresser is all for plucking out the obvious ones, but I actually find I'm quite attached to them now (emotionally as well as physically, you understand). Don't mind the odd one; not sure what I'm going to do when it's the brown ones that are in the minority!

holidaywonk · 17/12/2007 14:05

I have lovely badger streaks and have had since my mid-twenties. The rest of my hair is very dark so I looked proper stupid for a few years until I gave in and started dyeing it. I use the cheap at-home ones cos can't afford £50 at the hairdresser every six weeks, but unfortunately I don't think it's a lie that the cheaper ones are bad for your hair - they've made my hair pretty dry.

LadySanders · 17/12/2007 14:06

apparently even the semi permanents leave a residue on your hair which builds up over the months/years... i have now started just doing the roots with the level 2 dye (ie not the permanent ones which i think are drying) and that seems to be keeping it in OK shape

Sazisi · 17/12/2007 14:07

I started getting a few greys at 19, and now at 32 I've got loads I saw a pic of me taken outside recently and was shocked!
I think highights work best for disguising it; dark dye jobs look really crap when they grow out even a few milimetres.

fruitymum · 17/12/2007 14:10

Frightened to say this - but no grey hair yet(am 36) , very blonde with fair skin that burn easily and never tans if thats any conselation.

holidaywonk · 17/12/2007 14:11

Mind you, when I did start dyeing my hair, all of my female friends and relatives were mightily relieved and said it looked much better, but my male friends/relatives either didn't notice, or said that they had preferred it before.

Not that it's all about what the men think, of course...

soanxious · 17/12/2007 15:56

Thanks everyone!
I have had a few since I was about 17 at which point I went blonde and have been ever since!

But when the roots come through or if I separate my hair at the front etc I can't believe how much there is now, over the past year or so!

Hardly any at the back, just loads in the first 2/3 of my head!
