Getting teeth done - your recommendations

I'm looking for recommendations to dentists who straighten/whiten/fix teeth.
I'm happy to go abroad and would be interested to hear from anyone who has done this.

Almost every dentist does this so it might be useful to provide the area you live in, if you are looking for some specific dental surgery recommendations.

I had Invisalign to straighten, some thin porcelain veneers fitted afterwards (to replace older ones I had) and whitening, which was included in the Invisalign package. They turned out really well and I would definitely recommend Invisalign.

@PARunnerGirl how often do veneers needs replacing?

I was thinking of going abroad as the prices are supposed to be better there.

I first had veneers on my two front teeth in 1991.

Had them redone in 2020, fantastic cosmetic dentist and the colour matching lab was incredible, all my teeth are slightly whiter in the centers so the replicated that with individual brush painting before refiring.

Quite a long process, maybe two months with cleaning, whitening and making sure the gums have settled prior to taking moulds.

Cheshire practice.

@BrassCandlestick My first set lasted me 19 years. To be honest, they were still ok even then. I just felt they always looked uneven because the teeth underneath weren’t straight so the veneers were all different thicknesses. I am much happier with them now.

Sounds amazing. Could you share the name of the dentist please, I'm in that area. Feel free to message me if you prefer.

Don’t do it. If your teeth feel painless and comfortable now, don’t mess with them. I had mine whitened, the dentist said they would ache a bit but it would go away in a few days. The pain was so bad I had to stop the treatment and three months later the pain still hasn’t stopped, I’m scared it might be permanent. The dentist still insists it’s not possible for simple whitening treatment to cause permanent pain like this.

@RestingMurderousFace it's Whitby Dental Practice in Ellesmere Port. Dr Prince I think but I could look it up for you, probably still have the receipt.

Not exactly where you would expect to find an amazing cosmetic dentist but I was recommended the place by someone in the industry when DD's back tooth needed a root canal about 7 years ago (she has weak patches on her back teeth so needed careful management)

Turns out people travel a fair distance to use them and we wouldn't go elsewhere now.

stayathomegardener · 02/12/2021 18:31

@Cariah I think that's why it took so long, they didn't use aggressive whitening, I had a hygienist appointment to do a manual plaque scrape then bleached them at home for a few weeks, then had to wait for the colour to settle.

Is it worth getting someone else to give you another check up if they still hurt?

OldWivesTale · 02/12/2021 18:52

Is it possible to whiten your teeth if they are naturally yellow - as in, they've always been quite yellow, as opposed to teeth that have yellowed/ stained with age? I dont seem to be able to get a definitive answer from Google. My fear is that if the dentin underneath is yellow then bleaching won't help?

Andante57 · 02/12/2021 18:57

Oldwivestale the enamel had come off my front teeth leaving them yellow and when that’s happened it’s impossible to whiten them.

Andante57 · 02/12/2021 18:58

Old wives, sorry, I mean they can’t be whitened unless major (and expensive) treatment is done on them.

Bloody hell, wasn't expecting that, thought it would be Wilmslow or somewhere, lol. Got family in Chester so it's not a million miles away. Written it in my notebook, thank you so much! Flowers

I wouldn't go abroad - remember you will need to go back every 4-6 weeks for new braces (if Invisalign) which is a pain in the arse at the best of times never mind with Covid. My BIL is a dentist and makes most of his money from fixing botched dental work done on the cheap in Hungary or wherever.
I had Invisalign and whitening done in London, I'm very happy with the results and if I need a check up or have a problem I'm in the same town not 1000 miles away!

Yes I reckon this will be the influencing factor

If it’s just straightening you need then Invisalign are great - you can also have a bit of composite bonding to even out any small chips or worn teeth. You can then have some whitening treatment too.

It really depends on what you’re unhappy with. Veneers are certainly at the more extreme end whilst something like Invisalign isn’t invasive at all really.
