DD moving to Manchester - wants a warm waterproof jacket

Sadik · 29/11/2021 21:09

She's 19, doesn't drive so will be walking / on public transport. Generally her style is outdoorsy / casual, so something like a ski jacket type style would probably suit, but it definitely needs to be properly waterproof.

Any suggestions welcome, it's her Christmas present from me, so would like to find something nice.

(I'll show the options to her before I buy, but she hates shopping so would like to be presented with a selection to choose from!)

If she’s going to be walking a lot then she’ll need something longer length so her legs stay dry.

I rate merrell coats for warmth and being properly waterproof, but they’re not very fashionable!

Bettybantz · 29/11/2021 21:21

I live in Manchester - it’s very wet 😂

I haven’t had this off this year and my son who is 19 says it’s cool. I have no idea but I like it and it’s very practical.

This is lovely too and comes in loads of colours. I like the khaki but DD may have a different preference

I have something a bit like this.
It's warm enough for most weather and quite waterproof.

GoodnightGrandma · 29/11/2021 21:34

Make sure it covers her bum to keep her warm.

Looks good, that might definitely fit the bill. I should say we do live in Wales, so Manchester not likely to be too much of a shock in terms of wet, but probably rather colder!

@VanGoghsDog they're labelled as water resistant

buddhasbelly · 29/11/2021 21:39

I live in tthe Highlands and wear this - it doesnt specifically say waterproof but it has kept me dry in horrendous weather. It's incredibly warm too. Think it comes in 6 colours.

Yes, which isn't waterproof.

FinallyHere · 29/11/2021 22:07

https://www.protected-species.com/product/waterproof-winter-parka/

Combining the technical qualities of sports wear, truly waterproof, ventilated and comfortable with beautiful, practical fabric

These are the the dog's bits.

Not cheap but really good value. There are often discount codes, too. Mine gives me a reason to be glad it's raining.

tinierclanger · 29/11/2021 22:10

Heated and waterproof :)

Yes, which isn't waterproof.

didn't know it was different, thought if it stopped you getting wet it'd be fine

It is different.

Water resistant is only really any good in showers. For proper rain you need waterproof.

There is a rating but I can't remember the scale and not all manufacturers show it.

Something like this? www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/womens-arctic-parka-4r2v?variationId=21L

-although it says responsibly sourced down you'd maybe have to independently check that.

missmoon · 30/11/2021 07:28

There is a good selection in this shop: www.outsidersstore.com/womens-outerwear

I really rate Patagonia. It’s not cheap, but very good quality, and everything is ethically made using recycled materials.

missmoon · 30/11/2021 07:31

My DD has the Uniqlo hybrid coat, and it looks well made. She’s very happy with it: www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/outerwear/coats-jackets/hybrid-down-coats-parkas

BringMeTea · 30/11/2021 07:59

Just sayin'... Grin Water resistant will suffice. However if she is planning on spending time in Cumbria...

I’ve seen this on, it’s very warm and waterproof too. Suitable for valleys rain 😂 so sure it’ll suit wherever you are

BBOA · 02/12/2021 22:33

Most 19 year olds I know would not wear Regatta/Joules/Lands End etc. Depends how fashion conscious they are. North Face, Carhaart,Urban Outfitters are all in. Great for the 90s ‘vintage ‘ look. Can’t beat a black puffa!

DeadoftheMoon · 02/12/2021 22:37

Also thermals. As one with decades of experience of Manchester public transport, as well as a good jacket (waterproof. After a few cold waits for buses, she'll happily sacrifice style for being warm and dry), she'll need good thermals.
