Retraining as beauty therapist

At the ripe old age of 38?

Is this silly? I currently work in hospitality and love my job, but I really love beauty and can see myself being very happy doing it as a job. I'm good with people and don't feel squeamish about it.

I'd also really love to run my own business some day...and time's a-wasting! I'm not likely to start my own restaurant. I can't cook for one thing! But I think I could have a small beauty business.

What do you think?

PS: ripe old age is tongue in cheek. I realise that 38 is not "old"

Nothing is ever silly if you want to do it!

Santaischeckinglists · 28/11/2021 11:01

Do it. My dd's bff makes nearly 1k just working a Saturday from home...
Shock

Would you be doing something niche? In my town every second shop is a beauty therapist and they usually close down after 6 months. There is a saturation in the market for bog standard treatments.

gogohm · 28/11/2021 11:08

It's not silly but you need to target your market carefully. There's lots of beauty therapists at different price points offering almost identical services. I'm assuming that you cannot compete on luxury so unless you want to be a bargain basement business you need a niche. Domiciliary work within older clients might be worth considering, foot care in particular isn't easy past a certain age (I get mine done every 6 weeks) not glamorous but at £22 for 40 mins decent money

Thanks for these responses! This had dropped down my Threads I'm On, so hadn't seen this.

Good point re finding a niche.

I would like to wfh or as a mobile therapist rather than setting up premises somewhere else. Unless obviously, it's a rip roaring success and I have to take on a huge team of staff 🤣

Male intimate waxing? Men pay well.

Consider any restrictive covenants in new builds and that transporting all those chemicals etc and setting up in homes things get damaged. I split CND acetone on my table once and it burned through the top layer of lacquer really quickly.

LHOOQ · 28/11/2021 14:55

I'd be totally fine doing intimate waxing. Also wonder how much training I'd need to do to do permanent hair removal etc.

I once saw a lady who did nails on a mobile basis but worked from a fully kitted out van! I thought that was a great idea because mobile treatments are great in theory but I’m always put off by feeling like the house needs to be spotless 😂

LHOOQ · 28/11/2021 21:17

Ha! I love the idea of a van. Agree re having to clean the house before you get whatever treatment it is you're having.
