Hi! Hoping you lovely lot can help?
I'm very overweight and have issues around this which I'm working through. One of them is that I completely neglect my appearance because I "don't deserve to look nice whilst I'm fat"
So, I want to change this but don't know where to start.
My hair is nice and thick but unstyled and going grey.
I have nice eyes but never wear make-up or get things waxed or shaped.
I pretty much live in grey/black tunic tops and leggings.
I wear an anorak 😨 (would love a really stylish coat)
I also really need to smarten myself up for my career (dress for the job you want type situation)
So, can anybody give me any makeover tips, nice brands, stunning plus sized coats ? Any suggestions at all about where I can start will help me form my action plan.
Thank you!!

Try following Laura Adlington from Bake Off on Instagram, she posts lots of plus size fashion and always looks fantastic and she's so lovely.

LHOOQ · 28/11/2021 09:41

I'm a size 18 and love fashion.

I have just bought a coat from Monki, which I love. I'll see if I can link it.

There used to be a plus size fashion thread on here and I saw it again recently, but it seems to have gone quiet.

Beachlovingirl · 28/11/2021 09:43

Get eyebrows done first and see where that lands, and perhaps next step can be hair.

This will elevate your appearance and you can look in the mirror and next to the hair and brows, what needs to be next.

Do you have the time to start doing your steps every day? Harder to do in the winter but not impossible Smile having a goal of steps every day can encourage you to exercise by walking and feel good by reaching a goal too (and seeing results on the scales)

Inclinedtochatter · 28/11/2021 09:44

I would start with getting your eyebrows waxed. It makes such a difference to your face and will emphasise your pretty eyes. I'm not one for beauty treatments but it's the one thing I get done regularly. Hair just needs a good cut and if you fancy it get it coloured. Grey can look awesome on some people but it makes me look frumpy and old. I've just started using the Lose it app again. You put in your height and weight and how many pounds you would like to lose a week (I'm being realistic and have put in 1.5 pounds) it gives you a daily calorie allowance and as long as you are honest and log everything you eat (inc that small piece of cheese that can't possibly matter!) it works. Clothing wise I'm stuck in a rut myself of jeans and t shirts so hoping someone else comes along with good advice!

@Disfordarkchocolate thanks, I've followed her now.... I did like her in Bake-off so will give that a look.

@LHOOQ never heard of them before, just looked them up and am tempted by one or two coats. Do you know how generous their sizing is?

I get very, very little time for myself except in school holidays which is why things like hair and eyebrow waxing have fallen by the wayside. That said, ds is 9 now and not a toddler so perhaps he just needs to get used to coming along with me for some things.

I've found their coats to be on the generous side.

Good to know, thanks!
Am tempted by a completely ridiculous fake fur with hearts on Grin

Go for it! You only live once.

I am not a Parisian chic or classic/conservative dresser at all! You don't have to wear black if you're bigger, but obviously if that's your style, that's your style. I like wearing colour and it suits me better.

Other sites I like at the moment are Never Fully Dressed (although I've only browsed on there) and Lucy & Yak. Some of the L&Y is a bit bonkers, but they have some less out there stuff too. I am fond of their boilersuits and pinafore dresses. Not really into dungarees as a rule. Feel a bit like a telly tubby in them! But others love them.

I’m not sure what size you are but there are a lot of stylish plus-size brands out there. For coats, try Simply Be, Joe Brown, the Debenhams website and Primark go up to a 20. Louise’s Closet have half-price dresses in plus sizes ( as in up to size 30) from Joe Brown, Simply Be and shops like Sea Salt. When I was size 20 that’s where I got most of my clothes from and also the supermarket brands will have larger sizes too. The coat I had the most compliments on was £15 and size 18 from Depop - you can get some great bargains if you’re prepared to trawl. You deserve nice clothes whatever your size and shape - you don’t have to punish or shame yourself for being overweight. I’d also second eyebrow shaping/waxing- it is the beauty treatment that makes the most difference to your face. Also, it’s quick, relatively cheap and most salons will be fine with your son sitting in the waiting area for 5m. Good luck x

Eyebrow threading takes all of 10 minutes.

It makes a huge difference to your face, it will open up your eyes and instantly make you feel better about yourself.

Could you find somewhere to go and get that done in your lunch break / whilst DC at school?

If you start prioritising yourself a little bit that will work wonders for your self esteem.

This thread is really making me think actually that I don't prioritise myself at all and that's a big part of my problems. But no, I laughed a bit at getting my eyebrows threading in my lunch hour. I'm a SEND teacher, popping out for a quick spruce up really isn't something that happens Grin I can make time for it though just need to work it out. Leaving early one day is probably more feasible.

Right A you deserve to dress and feel stylish and pretty no matter your size girl !

While trying to lose weight, never pass on buying a piece of clothing you like and that fits you just as you are now. Especially if you have a lot of extra weight, that can take quite some time to slim down, so if you have the money, treat yourself and feel good now !

Women of any size should never trade comfort for style. There are many clothes that look pretty but are horribly uncomfortable to wear ( and there are a lot of comfy clothes that look like old pajamas, that's not what we want either Grin). Only buy clothing you feel you could wear all day.

Since you're mostly wearing dark shades, maybe find yourself a few block color pieces that aren't too much out there but still vibrant. I find plain colors easier to wear and assort than patterns and more elegant but that's me ! Deep forest green, camel, rusty orange, bright red... whatever !

I have a bright red wool coat. It's a bold choice but I get tons of compliments on it every winter season. It's warm too. It's a stand out piece that about anybody can rock yet few people do it. Works great with grey or white hair !

When it comes to looking put together, I think nothing spoils a look like ragged out shoes. Wear heels if you're into heels, sneakers if you're into sneakers, but they should be clean and in good condition. Simpler = better. I like ankle cut leather boots because I think they're easy to match with different outfits.

I'm not overweight myself so my advice on cuts and shapes that fit plus sized figures is kind of moot, but I would avoid extra frills on the neck line that tend to accentuate breast size, they're more for flat chested women imo.

Keep in mind there is a good second hand market for plus size clothes as they're typically more expensive in stores. If you treat your clothes well you can get good money reselling them.

Chr1stmasCarole · 28/11/2021 11:28

Brilliant, thanks for the tips and the website recommendations, I'm looking through them all and am loving Louise's closet so far!
@mirabelle04 my dream coat would be a long red wool coat so very jealous of yours Grin

You know what you need to do as you have listed it above .
Go to a hairdresser and get a consult having looked around online at what you possibly like . Hair is everything !
If you are getting eyebrows done don't go for anything outlandish - just a tidy up wax/threading and gentle shape to start with .
I am a huge coat fan as you feel good in one regardless of what is underneath .
Make up - why not try a bit of mascara to start with .
Suggest you join the FB group Style Sisterhood - you will see lots of people asking for advice on there and you will see amazing transformations with little things on many occasions .

Hey OP. Smile. It’s quite a big question you’re asking and I don’t think you can implement everything immediately… it would be expensive for a start. I don’t think you should rush out buying random items without a plan. Plan over the next few weeks and then buy a few pieces in the sales. Think about what your lifestyle is like, what your wardrobe is missing and direction you want to go in. ( it might necessitate a notebook ) I have a tendency to buy formal or “going out” clothes but mostly wear casual (so don’t be me.) Set up a Pinterest board then save any images you see. Im not sure what brands you like or what size you are but for a burst of absolute size positivity I’d check out Universal Standard ( an American brand). They’re pretty stylish and show their items on every body size. Check out some of their videos on You Tube. ( I’m not saying buy from there but I want you to know that you deserve to dress the body you have now) Im a size 16 but was an 18 and shopped at Cos, Arket, Kin at JL, Monki, M&S but there are plenty of plus size ranges out there now ASOS, Mango have Violetta ( spelling? Confused ) H&M etc.
Do you have a good hairdresser. I’d book a hair appointment because that never fails to lift me. If not possible at the moment I’d buy myself some lovely shampoo & conditioner, a body brush and nice moisturiser and some skincare. I like French pharmacy brand La Roche Posay - a nice moisturiser and cleanser. ( no doubt reduced at the moment) If you want a little make up but are not sure about it look at Glossier. “ Stretch” concealer for under eyes, a little Cloud paint ( a cheek colour) and coloured lip balm would be a subtle start point… but that’s not to say you need it. I think I’ll shut up now… do you have a stylish friend you could ask to help you with all this?

Divebar2021 · 28/11/2021 12:27

PS. A great coat is a good starting point!

Chr1stmasCarole · 28/11/2021 13:21

I'd just like to second the person who said to buy clothes that make you feel good for the size you are now, even when you're losing weight. Just looking in the mirror and liking what you see is such a boost.

Riverlee · 28/11/2021 17:17

Find out what shape your body is, and also what co,our palette you are. Then buy clothes that suiypt your body and shop.

Since doing that, I’ve got more compliments. The other day, I was wearing a jumper in one of my colours. Someone asked if I’d lost weight - I hadn’t. Not saying I get it right all the time, but I have more hits then misses now.

Forgot to say, I’m not a skinny supermodel, but wear size 18-20 trousers.
