Another coat thread sorry Grin

I want a new warm, long (knee length), down, water repellant coat with a double zip from a decent brand that is also stylish enough to wear with dresses and also jeans.

Not asking too much GrinTwo years ago was going to get the Rab deep cover Parka so along these lines And still a contender but think there will be more stylish options out there.

Definitely want an outdoor brand rather than uniqlo or m and s Michael Kors etc. just because I'd usually buy these but have loved having the Barbour so much and that was my first decent branded coat. Brands like Patagonia /fjalleaven/ mountain hardware/ mountain equipment/

budget is around £250 but is flexible and this a huge investment for me it has to last many years. Thinking something wrapped up for winter markets, standing on stations waiting for trains, standing in the playground as well as popping to the shops etc. maybe a cold holiday in New York. But breathable for not freezing days

Would like hand covers with thumb holes.

No idea what colour -Barbour is green. Not pale pink or pale purple or pale blue. Open to other all other suggestions. Preferable machine washable and tumble dry too.

My list is exhausting sorry!

I have a below knee length down coat by Nike. It’s grey and white, double zip, hood and amazing double zip pockets. It’s slightly tailored so has a nice form to it.

Last February it kept me toasty whilst I watched my son’s outdoor ice hockey practice in -18. And also a walk in the artic circle in -23!

Today it has been perfect for a snowy walk in the forest in northern Norway.

I can wash it on a gentle wash and tumble dry it carefully to keep it fluffy.

I ordered it online from Nike and it was about 2500kr so about £200. It is amazing! I can wear it with my outdoor gear or jeans for around town. I also use it for playground duty.

Couple of options at Arcteryx. More than your budget though.

Ethical down is expensive. So if you want it I would look at Patagonia as well maybe. I'm not sure what other companies stance on down is.

Can I ask why down? As an insulating material it's not terribly well suited to the British climate. I know it's popular right now and loads of brands are making down jackets but I just wanted to flag that synthetic options may be harder wearing (you can wash them, for a start), and better ethically and sustainably.

@JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle that sound fab!

@TheWholeWorld very good questions and points raised.

Husband has a vast array of down coast from various brands -haglofs, Montane, phd, rab- he has pretty much bought one every few years for the the past 20 years or so. So I'm always of jealous of them he has one for every type of weather! Where as I I always end up in some poor man's version- - so basically jealousy!

I will have a look at the ethical practices. My Barbour was really warm and is there fibredown synthetic filling so may consider it.

What would you recommend as an alternative? Thank you

Didrikson - use recycled polyester for their ‘down’ . Just ordered one for DH and delivery is pretty fast.
I have 2 of their jackets already - one a parka from 2018 which looks good still, and a knee length coat from 2020 .
Look for one with 3 snowflakes in the description - very warm
