What are your 17 year old girls wearing?

My niece has asked me to get her something to wear for Xmas, either clothes or footwear, but I don't have a clue! As a mother of sons I could easily pick something for a boy but I'm completely stuck for a girl. She buys a lot of primark, new look, shien etc but I'd like to get her something more expensive and special - particularly as she's got a lot of those sort of clothes already. It was so much easier when they were small & you could buy toys!

I know it would spoil the suprise but I would run a few things past her- like nice trainers are expensive for a 17 year old, so maybe send her some links within your price range and see which ones she likes?

DD13 is 13 and likes new look, river island, urban outfitters, superdry- lives in jeans and hoodies, and will only dress for a wedding or birthday.

gogohm · 27/11/2021 11:10

One of mine likes soft dresses and tights, the other either jeans or mini skirts and revealing tops Angry.

By 16 they have differing styles

Whycantibetangy · 27/11/2021 11:30

I have a 16 year old who lives in tiny scraps of fabric from places like Shein, PLT etc and a 15 yr old who favours oversized hoodies and mom jeans. Neither would wear the others style but both wear converse and have recently asked for a shacket.

If she has asked for something to wear she might have something in mind already, ask her to elaborate or send her some links to things you have seen? Does she like your ‘style’? What was she wearing when you last saw her?

I feel for you OP, clothing is so personal and easy to get wrong

notsureconfused · 27/11/2021 11:34

She likes crop tops and flared leggings or mom jeans. For parties she wears body con mini dresses with docs. Her style is so far removed from mine I have no idea why she's asked me! And she very specifically wants a surprise too 🙄

My dds like Pull and Bear and Urban Outfitters, Hollister. Both like convers , also various white trainers.

EachandEveryone · 27/11/2021 13:49

My nieces love this shop especially as they haven’t got one locally www.monki.com/en_gbp/index.html

YoComoManzanas · 27/11/2021 13:51

Can you give her a gift voucher or offer to take her on a special shopping trip to nearest city with grown up lunch?

Tillsforthrills · 27/11/2021 14:06

Footwear or coats are good and usually expensive for a 17 year old to afford. North Face Nuptse jackets, Afghan coats/jackets, handbags, Doc Marten boots, branded Joggers etc. Ask a sibling or her mum what she would like?

ShaunaTheSheep · 27/11/2021 14:18

What's your budget?
DD asked for a puffer jacket. North Face is way too spendy. She chose this from Hollister
www.hollisterco.com/shop/uk/p/puffer-jacket-47117821?seq=01&faceout=prod1

She wears mom jeans and flares from Zara, cropped hoodies and fleeces, corduroy mom trousers and pinafores, converse, vans etc.

RaoulDufysCat · 27/11/2021 18:23

DD is 15 but sounds like she has similar style to your niece. I second Hollister, Urban Outfitters, Monki and Pull & Bear.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 27/11/2021 23:35

My 17 year old likes converse, jeans and hoodies ( And is a geek😂)
My 16 year old loves vintage, crystal jewellery and edgy stuff. She is far easier to buy for.
I would, as a mum, not buy them clothes unless it's underwear / pjs, unless they were with me.
Jewellery- try Etsy lanamoon has nice crystal jewellery. I also buy my eldest science jewellery.
Also look at acrylic jewellery and funny earrings. Both my two wear these.

nancy75 · 27/11/2021 23:39

I think it’s too tough to choose this yourself - this age can be very particular & you can guarantee if we like it then it’s probably wrong!
I’ve got a 16 year old who is full on goth - she would hate some of the suggestions on here (just like those kids would hate her black lace granny dresses 😀)

oohyoudevilyou · 27/11/2021 23:51

Black running tights, black oversized hoodie and Yeezy trainers. And a stroppy expression.

Oneforthemoneytwo · 27/11/2021 23:56

No hollister! Agree covered are safe. She likes LOVISA jewellery, docs, band T-shirts and anything from urban outfitters

Victoria1083 · 28/11/2021 00:47

My DD is not into clothes shopping at all, so wears whatever I buy for her. I’m actually worried about this but she really doesn’t seem to care and says that she always gets complimented on her clothes. She is very anti fast fashion (same as her friends), says she wants to be a minimalist when she is older and prefers quality over quantity. She has a few pairs of mom jeans, 2 pairs of Nike Airs, some wide legged cropped trousers and a selection of jumpers and hoodies from Jack Wills, Hollister, Whistles, Uniqlo and small independent shops. Her t-shirts are from all over the place.
So yes, very individual at this age it seems but if she is quite into fashion, I would probably just get her a voucher from ASOS so that she could choose something to her liking. Alternatively, I would get her some classic timeless jumper, eg cashmere or on the other side of the spectrum, a Nike or an Adidas jumper/hoodie

SE13Mummy · 28/11/2021 01:12

My 17-yr-old loves her [[https://gooseandganderltd.com/collections/hoodies/products/g-g-unisex-goose-hood
Goose and Gander hoodie]] with a small goose on it. It's not especially expensive but she gets lots of compliments on it, even more so when she wears it with the matching jogging bottoms. She has a very mixed style ranging from slinky satin dresses and lace crop tops through to wide leg jeans worn with hoodies or oversized blazers, sometimes both. If someone was going to surprise her with an item of clothing then she'd probably like it to be a genuine North Face gilet in black or brown.

Lol I’m with you on this!
Monolithique · 28/11/2021 12:38

To add to what I said before, out and about you see a lot of girls in chunky doc marten type boots, mid length coats, patterned tights and shortish pinafore dresses .

shiningcuckoo · 28/11/2021 18:50

I didn't realise you could buy a stroppy face. No need. I have plenty in my house I can give you.

JaceLancs · 28/11/2021 23:29

What is your budget?

Wiredforsound · 29/11/2021 01:11

Dr Martens are very ‘in’ at the moment and they do some great bags. My DD (16) covets a mini satchel (and will probably get one as a pre ent for Christmas).

SplodgeWaddler · 29/11/2021 06:58

It would very much depend on her style.

For school/going out mine wears pleated, satiny short skirt, tights, DMs with a black top/jumper for school. Accessorised with lots of jewellery (normally glass jewellery she’s bought from the charity shop) and ideally dangly earrings, although she doesn’t have many yet!

Everything is relatively simple. Lots of black. No labels, apparently they’re “basic”. Vintage/preloved is cool.

Jeans wide at the ankles.

At home she wears hoodies and leggings or comfy trousers.

SplodgeWaddler · 29/11/2021 07:02

Bershka is maybe a good place to look too. They do good cargo trousers

HelloDulling · 29/11/2021 07:04

Another vote for Urban Outfitters. You’ll find something there.

Itsnotdeep · 29/11/2021 07:08

My dd is 17 in Jan and dresses like your niece. I wouldn't buy her clothes as I'd get it wrong! But yes, cropped tops all the time, showing as much boobage and midriff as possible.

If you really wanted to spend money though, my dd loves her ugg boots (she wears them in the house and for slobbing around, not ever for going out!). She also loves her dressing gown which she also wears non stop in the house.
