Giving up alcohol for vanity?

MoneySuccessFameGlamour · 27/11/2021 08:17

There used to be a thread on here about this but it is long gone.

I want to do this.

I honestly think that alcohol affects my looks. I've Googled etc and it seems as if there is something to this.

I am quite vain! I want a flatter tummy and beautiful hair and skin and I want to look well rested etc.

Will try this for a bit and see how it goes. Does anyone want to join me? I'm starting now.

How much are you drinking at the moment? I think that will have a big effect on how much you notice the difference.

PurpleDaisies · 27/11/2021 08:19

Should have said, it’s a good change to make-good luck.

FindingMeno · 27/11/2021 08:21

I don't drink at all.
Because I wasn't much of a drinker before (excluding my misspent youth) I haven't noticed a physical difference.
However I do enjoy being in control of my behaviour when out, and I think that makes me more attractive.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 27/11/2021 08:22

Stopping regular drinking did wonders for my skin. Half a bottle of wine used to make my face flush immediately, and the redness would last a couple of days. My skin is less dry now too (and I’m over 60).

I can’t join you on your journey because I’m already there, but go for it! It’s really lifted my mood too, but that took longer to see.

I would say I drink a good two big glasses of white wine maybe 4 times a week, on average. If I go out with friends I can out away probably quite a lot. But sadly I don't get out that much, so it isn't an enormous issue.

I don't drink Mon to Thursday and only drink the other days. I think that's already helped my appearance.

Nitgel · 27/11/2021 09:32

since I gave up I have completely lost my belly and urge to eat crap :D it's definitely worth doing

grey12 · 27/11/2021 09:40

I don't drink at all but don't think there's anything wrong with a little alcohol occasionally.

But OP sorry to say but you drink way too much!!!! It's so normalised I know but that is too much alcohol! Is bad for you.

One or two glasses when you go out or in a celebration. But avoid otherwise.

Think of it like a huge piece of chocolate cake. How many huge pieces of chocolate cake should someone have a week? Wink

nanbread · 27/11/2021 09:43

Last 5 years have been hard on me for a few reasons, I've not had much sleep and I've eaten a lot of sugar and I'm not overweight but look SO OLD AND SHIT and unhealthy.

I think it's more to do with the sugar than the alcohol as I've not drunk that much in the last year but have aged considerably and have a poochy belly.

I don't drink at all but don't necessarily think it helps my appearance, I'm still ageing (as you do) and think it's more to do with good genes. I think it's better to focus on the benefits for your insides, eg I believe drinking that much is more of a risk for breast cancer than taking HRT.

grey12 · 27/11/2021 09:47

@nanbread is right as well. I had an addiction to Nutella for a while Blush since I stopped buying it I saw a massive difference! Still eat sugary stuff but is more controlled

MoneySuccessFameGlamour · 27/11/2021 09:48

I don't really eat sugar (as in the sweet stuff in cakes) tbh... but alcohol is a sugar I think?

Actually, my dh was at a Christmas dinner with a colleague whose wife has just had breast cancer...and alcohol is so strongly linked to breast cancer. So that's a better reason to stop! But tbh, the vain reasons are an excellent carrot to the breast cancer stick!

I drink minimally, I can’t handle my drink! Among my friends there is a look that wine drinkers have, think it definitely drys out your skin. Three of my friends mums have had breast cancer all big wine drinkers. That definitely made a few of his reduce drinking.

Well, I have had breast cancer this year and I barely drink at all.

I did the whole drinking a lot as a student, but haven't drank very often/much for almost 30 years now. I wouldn't claim to look 35 or anything, but I think my skin does look 'fresher' than a lot of women in their mid 50s.

yoshiblue · 28/11/2021 23:34

I stopped drinking on 1st March this year, used to drink a glass of two most nights.

I sleep so much better, skin/hair/nails all much better. I also benefit from eating better generally and I now exercise 3/4 times a week. I lost half stone, the bloat around my stomach mainly and I'm more muscly/trim.

Massive psychological benefits too, my anxiety has completely disappeared and I feel happier.

yoshiblue · 28/11/2021 23:35

I wish you the best on your quest, I would say it's a hard time of year to stop though.

5128gap · 29/11/2021 12:02

I can't join you because I already did this. But I can encourage you by telling you that at 52 I look younger and better than I did ten years ago. I have almost no belly fat and a 24 inch waist. My skin is clear and glowy. Until two years ago my diet was appalling (though I've cleaned it up a lot now) and I've a history of sun worship and smoking. So literally the only thing I did 'right' was not drink, so cannot over state the benefits it must have brought to me. (I'm not teetotal, but only drink on my monthly nights out, and then no more than two or three.)

MoneySuccessFameGlamour · 29/11/2021 13:26

Thanks everyone! So far, so good, but very early days. I definitely am more inclined to do a proper nighttime skincare regime when I haven't had Wine. So that's got to go some way to helping.

Also can relate to not eating stuff after dark as I often do while drinking wine and it's totally unnecessary. Haven't had any massive sugar cravings or anything.
