what tights with red winter dress?

It's a lovely knit dress, true red, definitely an autumn/winter wear so my problem is what tights (and shoes) will go? Black is too harsh a contrast for me, but I don't have such good legs I'd want to wear anything bright. Grey? O wise ladies of Mumsnet please advise.

I would probably wear black but if too harsh for you, how about navy?

Can we see the dress? It sounds lovely.

yellowflowersintherain · 26/11/2021 22:48

I was also going to suggest navy. Could work with either brown or navy boots?

FindingMeno · 26/11/2021 22:51

Olive green maybe.
Or brown mid calf or knee high boots with red tights.

BurbageBrook · 26/11/2021 23:37

Definitely black! Sorry but black tights with black shoes is the only chic option here. Anything else will be too much colour.

MrsFin · 26/11/2021 23:43

Wouldn't Green look a bit elf-like?

Palavah · 27/11/2021 00:14

Grey is a great compromise for daytime, or just moisturise well, wear a slip and go bare-legged.

Craftycorvid · 27/11/2021 09:09

Grey is good, as is navy, royal blue and even some darker tones of purple. You can avoid any elf connotations with green if you choose a very dark and muted shade.

Polmuggle · 27/11/2021 09:15

Dart grey/black/navy/nude are the only tights that don't reduce grown women to childlike dress up!

orangejuicer · 27/11/2021 09:16

Subtle patterned ones Grin

Kiitos · 27/11/2021 09:20

Depends what you are wearing it for but I would also go for black. Sheer black might look less harsh than opaque black. Also agree black shoes. Though if you are wearing it for a party you might get away with gold shoes

MrsFin · 27/11/2021 09:54

Gold shoes with black tights would be too Minnie Mouse for me.

Hoppinggreen · 27/11/2021 09:57

@FindingMeno

Olive green maybe. Or brown mid calf or knee high boots with red tights.
And a pointy striped hat
MrsFin · 27/11/2021 10:33

And a bit of holly behind your ear.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/11/2021 13:20

I have discounted many a lovely dress for this reason OP. Even if I had better legs it's too cold to go bare legged in the winter for me.

Can you post a picture of the dress, I think that might help on the suggestions front?

FindingMeno · 27/11/2021 15:47

Oh bloody hell.
I've been watching too many Christmas films haven't I? Grin

5128gap · 27/11/2021 15:55

I really dislike red and black. It reminds me if the 80s in a bad way. I'd go for grey tights and boots.

whatisthisinhere · 27/11/2021 16:31

I would wear black barely there sheer tights and brown boots. I don't like the sharp contrast of black tights and boots. But it depends on the dress

merryhouse · 27/11/2021 16:51

silvery grey

dark grey boots

NoMoreTractors · 27/11/2021 16:55

I would say charcoal grey. I've bought my baby a beautiful red dress for Christmas and that looks lovely with charcoal tights.

gogohm · 27/11/2021 16:55

I would wear thick black daytime, nude in the evening, black shoes both scenarios

XingMing · 27/11/2021 17:36

Another person who dislikes black opaques with red, so I'd vote for grey opaques and grey boots, or sheer nude with tan shoes/boots for daytime, and a very sheer black with a subtle spot and black patent shoes for the evening.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2021 17:51

Is the dress long or short?

If short, I'd go black - maybe around 40 denier. If longer, maybe those sheer black ones with polka dots, or fishnets if not too cold.

I think grey would look awful. And green would be entirely ridiculous, imo.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2021 17:51

And we need a picture of the dress really.

Boood · 27/11/2021 18:37

Charcoal would look lovely if you can find them.
