Hello. I’m 38, had acne all my life. Had years where I’ve had spots, not as bad as it used too be. About a month ago, I went back on the mini pill to help with my awful periods. It’s helped the periods, as you can see my skin is absolutely awful. What did you use too treat your acne? The doctor had prescribed zineryt, been on that for quite a while and seems too of stopped working Confused what face wash/ cleanser do you use? If anyone could please recommend a foundation- that will give me good coverage. Thanks for reading.

Skin doesn’t look as bad in that pic

Honestly for me, I spent an absolute fortune on all the expensive lotions and potions but the only thing that made a difference was a prescription from a private dermatologist. My skin was CLEAN, but the problem was below the surface.
I was prescribed doxycycline and spironolactone, also differin gel and the acne I had been suffering with for years and so embarrassed about cleared up in a number of weeks.

Ime GPs will brush mild/medium acne concerns off and maybe prescribe something that's probably quite cheap and maybe will work. A private dermatologist won't mess around.

My daughter has had trouble with acne since about 13. Her skin is clear most of the time. She takes the pill that is no longer used for BC and that keeps her skin clear. She has had rounds of roacutain ( sorry cannot spell) from the hospital which works very well. She uses ponds cleanser to remove makeup and then pears soap to double clean. Nivea white tub moisturiser. And the holy grail of foundation Estée Lauder double wear. And a fine loose powder over the top.

I have roseacea which is also classed as acne, but I only use simple cleanser, unscented micellar water, DDML or nivea soft moisturiser. I sometimes use rose oil at night. I don’t do scrubs, peels or anything abrasive as I think they will just irritate it if it’s already inflamed.
I use a green revlon concealer, Superdrug conceal and define concealer plus foundation or Rimmel 24 hr smudge free foundation as I need heavy coverage when I’m having an outbreak.
For actual treatment I have topical antibiotic and a cream especially for roseacea.

I am the same age as you, and found being on the mini pill terrible for my skin. I swapped to the combined pill and it cleared up hugely. I am still spot prone and also have rosacea which I used to think was also acne. Soolantra cream (from Superdrug online pharmacy) has cleared up the rosacea and I found a really gentle routine helped a lot with the acne. I use Dr Sam's flawless cleanser or Cerave cleanser (the green one), avene tolerance moisturiser, neostrata spf50 and armani luminous silk foundation.

In the evening after cleansing I use the ordinary's retinol in squalene as I find despite my skin being really oily, it also gets really dry in the winter.

Skin and me or dermatica prescription and then use basic products otherwise like cetaphil or cerave.
Makeup I used to use mac camouflage but using the technique in one of Lisa Eldridge's video to avoid it being cakey.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations. I’ve got a prescription arriving from skin and me. I’ve ordered some basic face wash.

Hi, I know this was a while ago but how many months did it take for your acne as such to get better when you switched to combined pill? I was on mini pill for short while and skin is now horrible! Back on combined but wondering how long it will take to make my skin better. Thanx

Flowersinamilkbottle · 11/11/2022 13:48

@Cozza85 it probably took about 3 months. I then started working on the rosacea which had got worse as well and after starting the soolantra it probably took about 2 months (and that made my skin get worse before it got better). But interestingly looking back at that message I wouldn't now say I was spot prone at all. I probably have a spot every three months so things have also changed in that year!

Nyancat · 11/11/2022 15:53

Tretinoin here really helped. Then the rest of the time I use avene tolerance range, cleanser and repair balm, they are some of the only ones that agree with my skin. Nars sheer glow is one of the only foundations that doesn't break my skin out, I used to use vichy dermablend as well but it's quite full full coverage.

I started with this in my twenties.it was way worse than yours though. Big cystic type spots. Dianette pill got it under control. But then in my thirties the dr wouldn’t prescribe it and all the other pills just made it worse. Was referred to dermatology and tried all different antibiotics and topicals including tret but it’s hormonal so these things just don’t work. Couldn’t take roacctuane as suffer from depression. Last March I started taking dim supplements and my spots stopped appearing over night. My skin is completely clear. It’s never been this good

Goldfishbowls · 11/11/2022 16:02

I buy the hot cloth cleanser from Aldis and twice a week a strong Glycolic toner. Foundations tend to cause breakouts so i generally use Benefit concealer and Elf perfect finish hd powder.

OldSchoolCasualty · 11/11/2022 16:58

I invested in a La Roche Posay kit last year. and after having acne for over 20 years (so bad that I wouldn't leave the house without makeup on) it has cleared it right up, a large bottle of the face wash will set you back about 20 quid but it does last over 6 months!
