Help Xmas Party for new job is dress to impress

Help! I start a new job in the new year and have been invited to the Christmas Party to meet the team before I begin.

This is all very lovely of them, but I'm having a major panic about what to wear. The dress code is Dress to Impress and I have no clue how to interpret this. Obviously, I need to impress, being the new girl and all and so I don't want to underdress. OTOH I also don't want to be the one in a long sparkly gown if everyone else has put a nice top on with their jeans.

Any ideas?

Can you maybe say your age height and dress size? The wants for a twenty year old and a sixty year old could be very different, and the wants for a size ten v a size twenty also could be different.

Also where is the event, what sort of event is it. Posh hotel, restaurant, pub?

Cuck00soup · 25/11/2021 22:33

Yes that would be a good idea Smile I'm deffo not wanting to look like mutton.
5'2, size 12 (though most of my wardrobe is size 10Wink). Age 50 and usually seen in jeans and flat shoes or boots.

The do is at work venue but with caterers and live music, so my sense is they are making an effort.

Honestly, I think I’d email whoever hired you and ask for a bit of guidance.

Conkerharvester · 25/11/2021 22:38

My advice would be to ask the person that invited you. Most of us suffer from wardrobe anxiety so they’re likely to totally understand where you’re coming from. It doesn’t need to be a lengthy question, just a relatively light email saying you’re really looking forward to it and does dress to impress mean jeans/nice top or sparkly dress to Greatnewcompany

WildStallyn · 25/11/2021 22:50

There are some really nice dressy jumpsuits around at the moment that wouldn't look out of place either way.

IvorCutler · 25/11/2021 22:54

This dress code seems to be everywhere this year (on mumsnet at least). It’s anxiety inducing. And problematic imo. I do realise I’m taking this far too seriously but I’d be pissed off 😂 Dress to impress yourself. Feck everyone else (whoever came up with the stupid fucking dress code).

Something bright! Not black or charcoal.

mrssmiling · 26/11/2021 11:00

I agree that it’s a confusing dress code. I think the jumpsuit suggestion is great - there are also some lovely velvet dresses around which look good at Christmas. Nancy Mac might be worth a look.

Cuck00soup · 26/11/2021 11:17

Think you are all right, I'm going to have to ask for more info! Quite liking the idea of a Velvet jumpsuit, though I'm not sure how flattering it would be. At least it's something I would wear again.

This is very lovely. Expensive but would certainly impress!

I would think that dress to impress implies dressed up/sparkly/sequins/velvet/silk dress/etc...very much doubt it means jeans and a top!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 26/11/2021 12:04

Although you could, of course, wear black/indigo jeans, sparkly/sequin top and some beautiful shoes (absolutely don’t have to be high heeled!). Beautiful earrings and/or other jewellery works well if you don’t want to go OTT with ‘jazzy’ clothing.
