Proper velvet clothes. Do they exist?

I’m sick of seeing horrible velour stuff being described as velvet. Velvet is a heavy woven fabric and l would love a proper velvet dress. Not a stretchy thing.

Can you still buy it?

They do, but they're usually pricey.
Try Toast, Seasalt, etc. Seasalt definitely have velvet dresses at the moment, as I saw their catalogue yesterday.
There's another company, that I've seen linked to on MN, a smaller independent company that do beautiful dresses and knitwear, and they have a fitted velvet dress in the most beautiful forest green at around £160. It was luscious.

But I can't remember the company!!

Vintage monsoon velvet dresses are good

LiterallyKnowsBest · 25/11/2021 12:49

You can

I always look for cotton velvet - thick and non-stretchy. Most things claiming to be velvet are some sort of viscose mix.

You just have to pay more and look closely at the fabric composition.

Can’t immediately link as it really is a matter of individual items, wherever they’re from.

I've got the most amazing brown velvet Biba blazer inherited from my grandmother via mum. I don't think you can get them like that anymore. I'd look at second hand.

Nancymac look lovely but ££££

nordica · 25/11/2021 12:53

Boden used to do proper thick, cotton velvet as I wore their velvet skirts and dresses some years back as my winter staples. Looks like their current offerings are velour but worth checking eBay as you can usually find previous seasons Boden either new or in very good condition there.

I feel your pain op, I've been trying to track down some swishy thick velvet trousers for a couple of years but last winter even places like Toast were fobbing us off with velour.
The only proper velvet I see these days is second hand.

I wish I'd realised in the nineties/early noughties that it was about to disappear cos I'd have stocked up.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 25/11/2021 13:03

Velvet can be viscose. But it’s a woven fabric. I’ve just seen something in Cos, but it’s in black. I can tell it’s velvet because it’s sort of structural.

I like a bit of colour though. I remember wearing proper velvet trousers about 15 years ago. But now they’re just flappy jog pant things.

I've kept some velvet flares that I bought in Next in the (very early) noughties. Whenever I look at what currently passes for velvet, I think of them and walk away. Which is no help to you whatsoever but I know exactly what you mean.

Brora regularly has some velvet items but £££ and tends to be silk velvet rather than cotton.

Mercurial123 · 25/11/2021 13:41

NRBY have velvet clothes, viscose and silk mix. I couldn't tell you if it's good quality. I do have a silk shirt boyght in the John Lewis sale and that is excellent quality.

Although I can't get into it, I have a made in England, M&S, black velvet Chanel style suit from the mid 1980s. It is still very wearable now and cannot bear to move it on as it is an item I love and maybe one day... The quality and construction leaves the High Street and even much more expensive labels far behind and having just had a quick visit to some shops this morning and a very disappointing delivery from Boden (awful quality and one item has come apart in the box) I struggle to find anything to purchase that comes anywhere near most of what is already in my wardrobe.

I have some cotton velvet trousers from Pure Collection and used to have a cotton velvet coat from Hobbs. Both bought over a year ago though, but maybe worth a look!

Toast often do proper silk velvet tops and dresses.
