Funeral outfit for DD 14

Help please - my MIL, DD's grandma has sadly passed away. Funeral is likely to be in a couple of weeks.

DD, 14, lives either in her school uniform (polo tshirt and hoody) or jogging bottoms and oversize hoodies.

She doesn't need to wear black and I want her to be comfortable but I think her sweat pants are just maybe one notch too casual.

Shops are full of glittery, body con Christmas party outfits. Any thoughts about places we can look for something appropriate please? She's a size 10 and as I say, her style is relaxed in the extreme.

Thank you

Somewhere like H&M or Zara will have reasonably priced comfy stuff that is smart enough for a funeral without being too formal. Maybe a pair of simple comfy trousers and a fine knit top?
Even if her style is relaxed, it’s not too much to ask her to smarten up for one day for her Grandma’s funeral.

Wainwriter · 22/11/2021 20:17

Perhaps a pair of black trousers from somewhere like Next? Then any fairly plain jumper/top to go with them.

CMOTDibbler · 22/11/2021 20:19

Plain black trousers and a long sleeved t shirt or jumper. Plain and tidy - from the supermarket or H&M/ Primark is fine

She sounds just like my DD. Could she be convinced to wear tights and a very comfy dress? Like a black jumper dress or shirt dress? Or some plain black trousers (uniqlo does some that look smartish but are really comfy) and a nice jumper?
Sorry for your loss Flowers

My 14 year old dd wore flared stretchy black cords with a gingham top and converse to a recent funeral.

She wears flared leggings a lot which I think would be fine for a funeral with a nice jumper or oversized check shirt/shacket. I'd look on ASOS & H&M and try to get something she's happy to wear wear generally not just for the funeral.

I got a lovely pleated black skirt (with an elastic waistband) and black jersey top from H&M last month for a funeral.

Definitely try there.

BrilliantBetty · 22/11/2021 20:53

Does she have a preference?
A dress and tights, or black jeans and a sweatshirt. Or something smarter.
Though none of the funerals I have been to in recent years have been smart dress.

Will her school coat do for when outside?

Kite22 · 22/11/2021 21:05

What does she wear on her bottom half for school ?
Many (most?) teens wear black tailored trousers, which she can wear and then it shouldn't be too difficult to get a nice top.
Wearing something respectable, that she might not ordinarily wear, because it is her Nan's funeral is something that people do. There are occasions when you do dress 'as expected', an a funeral is one of those.

ManyManyBiscuits · 22/11/2021 21:19

Thanks all - I think a trip to H&M will be easier than ordering things online. To be fair to DD, she's not objecting to the proposal to dress smartly.

School coat - bless you! Her school uniform is black jeans so she doesn't even have smart black trousers.

About 3/4s of what she wears are cast off from my husband's teens and 20s wardrobe.

Well, very easy to ick up a pair of black trousers from any supermarket or reasonable clothes shop - or, indeed, charity shop.

You're right.

It's just one of those things because I'm flapping a bit - I looked at the New Look and River Island websites and everything looked inappropriate or awful.

Everyone has made very kind and helpful suggestions, thank you.

Next have some decent black jeans but that was in boys section not been in girls. I got a pair for ds of similar age as part of a smart outfit. Not sure what top to suggest but would she wear an oversize shirt with it? Clumpy black boots like Chelsea boots. I don't think she needs to be formal. Just well turned out and not super casual

I’ve just got these from new look, they don’t look quite as wide legged on as the pics make them look and they had them in store, super comfy and looked smart with black shoes and a longer line top.

TeeBee · 22/11/2021 22:48

Something like this from ASOS...with a long-sleeved black T-shirt and nice necklace?

My MIL died earlier this year. I borrowed stuff for both DC to wear to her funeral as neither wear particularly smart clothes generally, and it was during lockdown so no opportunity to pick anything up at the shops.
DD (then 14) borrowed a straight black Jersey dress from a friend (I think it was from new look) and wore with tights and school shoes.

Potentially black leggings with a long dark jumper might look smart enough with smart shoes?
