Would you risk this in the washing machine on cool?

I bought this coat and absolutely love it. What I didn’t realise is that it contains real down. I thought it was some sort of recycled polyester filling. It says to hand wash . Would you risk it on a very cool machine cycle? With the collar coming up high I can see makeup transfer being an issue so it’s going to need cleaning fairly regularly. Has anyone put down filled coats in the machine?

Never tried a down filled coat but I have washed a down filled duvet.

The issue I see is getting it fluffed up when it dries. With a duvet I tumble dry it with tennis balls and shake it a few times to help it fluff. But not sure how the outer material of that coat would take to tumble drying?

Thanks. I don’t have a tumble dryer so it would go on the line or airer. I think I probably shouldn’t risk it.

Nooooooooo, I have a similar one from Uniqlo and washed it on the hand wash setting thinking it would be fine, it wasn’t. I’ve fluffed it up an bit (tried the tennis ball trick but ended up having to do each section but hand) but still not as gorgeous as it was before.
So annoyed with myself for ruining a £150 coat after a few wears!

I have washed down coats before and they come up fine but you do need to machine dry them with lots of shaking/tennis balls/knotted towels to get the "pouff" back in the feathers.

You need a tumble dryer. I just washed a down coat and the zip went funny (even though it was a Haglofs down jacket and said could be washed and then tumble dried )

I would not risk it

karmakameleon · 21/11/2021 22:13

My Uniqlo down coat came out fine in a cool wash. No tumble drying required. But I did find that it needed just the same amount of fluffing up after a hand wash.

Thanks everyone. I’m not going to take the risk. As it’s the collar that’s going to need cleaning most I’ll just hand wash that as and when and then take it to be dry cleaned when it needs an all over clean. I love it too much to risk ruining it. LulusMiniEgg. I feel your pain.

If it's feathers it's the drying that makes the difference
Use this on the collar

Magic stuff, worked wonders on a velvet sofa that our old Labrador use to rub against ( miss her😔)

Justaweeone. That looks good stuff. I will invest in a bottle. Thanks.

Puffers are fine to wash but must be tumble dried ! I expect it says do not dry clean on the label ( a circle with a cross through it ) which is naughty because it should have the correct label on which is machine wash and tumble dry ! If you hand wash that don't spin it and leave it or drip dry it will stink and be ruined !
I'm an expert dry cleaner btw !

gunnersgold · 23/11/2021 18:10

Ex lol ( although I was pretty expert 🤣)

Cutelittlesquizzer · 24/11/2021 08:40

gunnersgold. Thank you so much. That’s very helpful. I did wonder about the hand wash unless it can be tumbled after because the weight of the wet feathers would slow down the drying. I can imagine it would get stinky too now you mention it.

It really .. ! We never dry cleaned puffers because the feathers don't like being in chemicals , it brings out the oil in them and can mark the outside layer of the coat . People thing duvets are dry cleaned but they are washed and it's just like a feather duvet tbh
I have washed hundreds of puffers over the years and haven't ruined one but the key is to wash , spin well and tumble dry low ish but for a long time !
You can get dry cleaners to do it for you for around £15 if you don't want to try it and it's good value because some are in the dryer for many hours !
