Box dye advice

Hi all,

I decided to grow out my grey during lockdown one as obviously couldn't get to hairdressers. I now have shoulder length entirely grey hair but it's really dented my self confidence (which wasn't high to begin with!) so I've decided to go back to colouring my hair.

Always used to go to hairdressers for my colour, however due to life events it's not feasible for me to manage that cost going forward so my question is -

Box dyes, is one better than the others? So many brands and choices! Do I need to avoid a certain colourway if I don't want it to be patchy? Hairdressers used to create me a great auburn - will this be achievable with box dye or should I go darker to avoid patchwork?

Thanks.

I'm a big fan of the John Frieda foam dyes, it's so much easier to avoid patchiness with this than with regular dyes.

I would go to a shop like Sally's and find a professional dye. They are much better quality than box dyes but you will need to get the right peroxide etc. Or find someone to advise you fully on what to use.

Nutrisse is good too, but you'd need two boxes to ensure good coverage.

Could you afford a one off visit to the salon for an all over colour then get the colour code and do your own roots with the matching box colour? This is what I did because of the pandemic. I couldn’t get the roots done at the salon so matched my colour and did my own roots each month. Then after a year of doing this I refreshed my colour with the same colour all over and then carried on doing my roots. I haven’t had it coloured at a salon since January 2020. I use Clariol nice and easy and the matching root touch up that takes 20 minutes. It creates a lovely shiny colour.

Josh Wood might be worth a look. I used their home colouring products in lockdown - very good. They do free video consultations…all very easy to book, and the consultant was great and very helpful..
