Are box dyes really that bad for your hair?

I hear lots of people say they aren’t good for your hair…is this true?

I use to box dye my hair all the time when I was younger now I get in done in a salon but occasionally I am tempted to go back to box dying. Tell me your thoughts?

I think it's more about the application. If you put dye on your whole head every time rather than just roots, you're going to have layer after layer of build up- the colour will be flat. A (good) hairdresser will make a judgment of what you need and will adjust your colour as required.

I usually go into Sally's and buy the professional colour the hairdresser uses (just ask them) and I'll do it myself every second time. That works for me because I wouldn't have the budget for the salon every go.

That looks good @DeadButDelicious, not too harsh at all.

My natural hair colour is almost-black and very Dark Brown box dyes just don't do the trick.

I think natural black is the way to go, I'm too old for the goth look (kind of!) and it works for most Spanish and Italian people tbh (similar colouring).

Never too old to be a goth WinkSmile

I'm naturally auburn but I've been dying my hair black (on occasion bright red and once hot pink) since I was 16 and I'll be 40 next year. I've forgotten what my own hair colour looks like! I suspect mostly grey now 😂😂

I use the john frieda foam and it's the easiest dye I've ever used. It also doesn't have any effects on my hair. I do also use decent shampoos and conditioners and think that helps a lot.

I mentioned to a hairdresser I bought some shampoo from Sally's and she said well that's actually what we use but put it in the big loreal pump bottles 🤫

I box dye (unnatural colour) to open up the cuticles instead of bleaching and then use vegetable dyes to top up inbetween. So I probably only use a box dye 2-3 times a year and my hair is dryer after if I don't look after it. I use intensive masks after every dye (root to tip so makes it greasy until 1st wash but no big deal) and after a vegetable dye I wash in much cooler water, add a big dollop of mask and a bag/ hat on my head for the heat for the last hour or so as I leave the vegetable dyes on for 3-4 hours to get maximum saturation. I also leave freshly coloured hair as long as possible (usually 4 days) before washing. Get it cut not as often as I should but when it needs it and mine's fine, I use Live colour as well which is known as one of the worst for hair- but does mean it causes the hair to take the vegetable colour better so it's 50 to 1.
