Warm but stylish clothes for 8+ years?

My dd is about to turn 8. She's very particular about what she likes to wear and recently seems to have grown up quite a lot and moved away from loving cutesy pink/sparkly/unicorn type things to more 'cool' older girl stuff.

I struggle with finding nice clothes which aren't too grown up, but that she's happy to wear now she's in the next category of clothing sizes in the shops. We have had some success with Zara recently, but I can't find anything acceptable to keep her bottom half warm. She either wears leggings or a dress with tights, but the leggings don't keep her warm at all. She won't entertain a pair of joggers but has said she would like to try a pair of jeans (she's had a bit of sensory issues with clothes so hasn't worn jeans before as she never liked anything restrictive around her waist, but she picked out some jean shorts over the summer which she likes). She likes to wear jumpers/hoodies etc so fine with warmth on her top half!

What do you girls wear when it's cold? Are layers the way to go? Maybe a pair of tights under some jeans?

DD(7) still wears leggings, but fleece lined ones from H&M. They do them in the 3for2 section so I always get a few! They're comfy and she says they're warm, plus they have lots of patterns, plus some plain ones. She wears them with a long sleeved tshirt and then a jumper or hoodie. She's got really long legs and I'm getting a bit concerned that next year they might not fit, but she's been okay so far this year.

She also wears tights and dresses, usually denim ones (or that style but different fabric, I just bought her a leopard print one from Sainsbury's) or a long jumper with tights or the above leggings. She only usually wears joggers when she's at home, unless it's for PE. Her little brother lives in them all winter, in comparison!

My daughter wears flares at the moment in a sweatpant fabric, also has thick legging style ones. They look fab on her and are really comfy. This kind of thing (she has these) but mostly in black. She has a good few pairs, I’m sure I got some in H&M and Zara a while ago.

Also next did really thick black leggings last year (not fleece lined). I must check if the have them back in.

Would elastic waisted jeans be comfortable for her?

IvorCutler · 14/11/2021 09:16

Or anything in a ponte fabric? Should be easy to find leggings in ponte. Sorry, I’ll stop now!

You can get really warm black leggings in Decathlon for dc to wear under their football kits in the winter.

I second the fleece lined leggings from H&M, they are fab.

Thermal tights are great.

If she doesn't like jeans around her waist maybe try jeggings, i think h&m do thicker ones, dd has some. With foxes on but I think they do them as normal ones too

My DDs (7 and 9) love H&M for most of their clothes.

For warm stuff we always go to Uniqlo. They have fleece lined hoodies and trousers, and padded coats that also look good!

I also buy their hats, gloves etc. in Uniqlo!

Should add, I find H&M good for stylish clothes that are not too grown up.

Have you tried MANGO,? Lots of nice styles there. The leggings are quite thick too. Thermal tights would be a good idea

Thanks everyone, some really great suggestions here!

I didn't know fleece lined leggings existed!! I will definitely try and get some for her. I did think about elasticated waist jeans. I've seen some paperbag waist jeans with elastic which look good for her to try.

I love the flares posted up thread too, thank you Smile
