What the buggery do I wear for a football match...

... in an executive box?!

DH's work has invited him and me to go watch a premier league game. Neither of us has been in a box before. It's a work/social thing and attendance is basically compulsory!

I've tried some googling to find out dress codes which has so far revealed "smart casual". The least helpful of all dress categories!

For DH we reckon he can get away with smart jeans and a shirt, but what am I meant to wear?

I'm going to have to buy something so any links appreciated! I'm tall and pear shaped have a huge arse and a 16/18, if that helps at all. And I bloody hate shopping Grin .

I wore long cord skirt, heeled boots, lambswool sweater and long earrings. Take a jacket as you may be expected to go out into the stand to watch the match, depends on the stadium.

It’s worth checking because some clubs have a no jeans rule (or certainly used to - it’s been a while).
If it’s a box with outside seats for watching the match, don’t forget to wrap up warm. You’ll be outside and sitting fairly still, so dress for about ten degrees colder than if you were going out for a walk in the same weather. More layers than you think you could possibly need. I underestimate this factor every time I go to a match in winter.

I’m on the pear side of things and I’ve just bought and absolutely fallen in love with this dress: www.hush-uk.com/knitted-roll-neck-midi-dress-black/001925-0456.html
Unlike most hush buy the larger size so the skirt bit skims but doesn’t cling. Gold pendant worn over the top for glam but most importantly you can wear flat boots, thick tights (with socks) and thermal layers underneath because @DaisyDozyDee is right about the temp!

I asked a similar question as I was invited to a box at Cardiff for the rugby a few weeks ago. The rugby crowd may be different but I wore dark straight leg jeans, a thin knit top and jersey blazer, chunky chelsea boots and a long necklace and layered bracelets. I'm also a 16/18. Most woman were wearing similar or had patterened dresses layered with cardigans or leather jackets, tights and boots. I took a heavy coat but didn't need it in the end although this may depend on the stadium. It wasn't anywhere near as formal as I'd thought it might be.

dylanthedragon · 13/11/2021 16:59

To add, the mean at the rugby were all in jeans, shirts, jumpers etc. Some were wearing smarter chino style trousers. It was an international match but there was no club colours or replica kit etc.

Thanks all. Have checked with DH and it's at St James' Park. Have looked at their website but can't find a dress code.

Would something like this work? If I wore it with a camel coloured wool coat and tan boots maybe?

Yes that dress would be perfect, or anything similar. Just avoid the opposition colours!

Amberflames · 13/11/2021 20:03

That would look great but I would try and go for something easier to layer. You’ll probably be eating inside and it could get a little warm.

I didn't even think about that! No idea who's playing Grin

I was at St James a few weeks ago and would say that dress looks great. I'm not a huge football fan but had a great time, couldn't tell you what the score was but the food and drinks were great!

Most annoyingly, the delivery time on that dress is blooming aaaaaages so that one is out. Trying to find something similar now Sad.

What were the men wearing when you were there, @Uptoongirl? Will smart jeans and a short be ok for DH?

Uptoongirl · 13/11/2021 21:34

The men were mostly wearing smart jeans (dark denim) and shirts with nice jackets. Couple of men wearing suits and a couple on the more relaxed side wearing jumpers and chinos. I wore a John Lewis midi dress and a black jacket, although it was warmer when I went, there is a cloakroom and the staff will pop coats away and get them as you go in and out.

I do remember looking for a dress code at the time and I think I found one saying no jeans but I think they mean blue denim. The staff were amazing, very accommodating.

Definitely not opposing colours though!

WalkingOnSonshine · 13/11/2021 21:48

Jumper dress over tights, boots and a warm coat.

If in black, even better - Newcastle play in black and white, so you’ll be ok in either of those colours.
