Ring sizing , how loose or tight should a ring be

Hi

Planning on treating me to a nice ring. Got one of those ring sizer’s . The ones that look a bit like a jailers key fob , with lots of plastic rings .

So there is one that fits but have to wriggle a lot to get over knuckle . Another that has a slight wriggle to get over knuckle,

I don’t know whether a ring should be tighter or looser .

Help, what do others do when sizing a ring .

Thanks

Better on the looser end if you’re in between because your hands will swell when they’re warm. As long as it doesn’t pass the knuckle easily then you’re good.

Meandyouandyouandme · 12/11/2021 20:54

I would say the tighter one, but it depends on how much you plan to wear it and what you do. I’m a healthcare assistant and wear plastic gloves, so have mine tight so no chance of losing my ring when I take my gloves off many times a day!

hugoagogo · 12/11/2021 20:54

If the ring your getting has a stone, then it needs to be a little bit tighter, to stop it swinging around all the time!

VanillaAndOrange · 12/11/2021 20:57

I have very big knobbly knuckles relative to the rest of my fingers, so a ring needs to be quite tight over the knuckle to be a good fit once it's on. Soap and water are my friends. Adjustable rings even more so!

Isabelle70 · 12/11/2021 21:14

I have a diamond solitaire and I have to wiggle mine 3 times to get it over my knuckle. If it ends up being too big you can have sizing beads fitted to the inside of the ring (little spots of metal that take up some of the slack) so it won't be so easy to pull the ring off. You can also have the back of the band thicker or wider than the front so if you have a stone it will be heavier at the bottom and won't spin.

Thanks, different views in tight or loose.

It’s a band with stones inset, so nit a stone sticking up but flat .

The tighter one needs lots of twiddling, the looser one just a little .

Think looser might be better . I think …

I think there's a bit element of personal preference. A ring that I had to wiggle/squeeze over my knuckle would make me a bit panicky - I prefer it to be as loose as possible without actually risking falling off.

BrunoJenkins · 12/11/2021 22:41

If you're planning to get pregnant soon after marriage then I'd say definitely looser! My fingers swelled up so much during my pregnancy that my rings are still really uncomfortable now even a year after our DC was born Sad

Lemon27 · 12/11/2021 22:42

I remember getting my engagement ring the jeweller said it's best to have a little wiggle on, little wiggle off, i.e. it won't fall off as its too loose but it doesn't take lots to get it off either.

In saying that...I literally left my wedding and engagement rings in this week to be resized up....2 sizes ... after I've finally accepted I probably am not going to shrink back to the size I was pre 2 babies and a pandemic Shock! I took my rings off before I gave birth to my son in April 2020....haven't worn them since!

At least I'll be able to wear them again! Without cutting off my circulation (as I almost did when I forced them on one day!)

WimpoleHat · 12/11/2021 22:43

I’ve had this dilemma. My rings vary a lot - in hot weather, they feel snug; in the cold, I can almost shake them off! I was told (by a jeweller) that with a ring with stones, the tighter the better. I’ve come to the conclusion that she’s right after getting a ring made smaller than was driving me mad whizzing round my finger! Ultimately, though, you’re the one who has to wear it, so get what feels okay for you.

MoriaRoseForever · 12/11/2021 22:52

Way past pregnancy ages !

It will be a smooth ring, with inset stones .

I find the slightly tighter one makes me feel a bit panicky , so probably slightly looser .

Thanks everyone.

And I expect easier to make smaller if I feel I need to .

It’s not a wedding ring , but it’s a special ring .

It depends on the width of the band too. The wider the band is the tighter it will fit for the same size. If the ring you are thinking of buying is narrower than the plastic ring sizer personally I would get the smaller one.

WimpoleHat · 13/11/2021 09:41

Beware channel set rings; apparently they are very difficult to make smaller. I had to look a long time for someone who would take mine down one size (it’s difficult, I was told, because the stones can pop out of the setting during resizing?).

WimpoleHat · 13/11/2021 09:43

Also - you can have rings sizes to half sizes - could that be your answer if you’re not sure?

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 13/11/2021 09:52

Looser is much better - you can’t re-size that type of ring so you need to get the size that is likely to fit you best for longer (hopefully forever). And since your knuckle is comparatively on the bigger side it will stop a looser ring from falling off.

My wedding and engagement rings are technically a size too small now since I was slimmer when I got them. They still fit me perfectly well in the winter but in the summer my fingers swell a bit on hot days so I end up having to take them off for days at a time. It’s very annoying, I do need to get them re-sized.

SoupDragon · 13/11/2021 09:55

Given it's a band type ring' I agree that the looser one is better. If it had a stone I would have said slightly tighter.

Anonmousse · 13/11/2021 10:06

I'm a jeweller and I would say a lot of people wear rings that are too big.
There should be some resistance when you take it off (although obviously it should not be restrictive) and ideally should not slide off easily.
If you need a ring larger to fit over your knuckle but then it spins around or is loose at the top of your finger, you can have small beads added inside the ring (it won't alter the overall appearance) to "stabilise" and keep it in place so the stones are not swinginging around.

Its actually easier to make a ring slightly larger than smaller.
Except full eternity rings. They are very difficult, virtually impossible to change size bigger or smaller.

MoriaRoseForever · 13/11/2021 10:37

@WimpoleHat

Ah thanks. I hadn’t actually looked at the sizes that the two were on the sizer, I assumed they included 1/2 sizes , they don’t. So the two I’m trying on are q and r. Looked in the website at the rings I like and they do a half size , aQ1/2 . Think that might be the answer .

This is the size of the ring, 4 x 21 mm

(Will try to attach pics) my DH bought me a surprise ring for a special birthday which I love but it is slightly too big - barely any resistance over my knuckle and whilst it wouldn't just fall off its loose enough to make me nervous! I took to our local jeweller who is normally brilliant at alterations and he was very reluctant to tackle it as (as pp said above) it has small diamonds in the band so making it smaller would likely make some fall out. He didn't suggest the beads on the inside and I didn't know about them at the time, but the band is very thin (literally just over a millimetre) so I'm not sure that would work anyway.

Anyway my point is I got these little silicon bands from Amazon for literally £2 and they just twist on and you can cut them to size and come in different widths, and are fab as a temporary fix, in case that helps anyone Smile
