Has anyone had orthodontic work with extractions?

I'm looking for experiences (hopefully positive) of people who have had orthodontics and had to have extractions.

I have very, very bad crowding which I think is going to be virtually impossible to sort without having teeth removed.

Sadly I didn't get it sorted as a child. I'm desperate to get my teeth fixed but really put off and worried my face will change for the worse if I have teeth removed.

Thanks in advance.

My dd had 2 teeth removed for her braces to get fitted. She has lovely teeth now

I did back when I was a teenager. I had 4 teeth removed and it’s amazing how the space gets filled - you won’t be left with gaps.

Yes. I had an overcrowding problem and had 4 teeth removed then wore a brace.

I subsequently had my wisdom teeth removed as well.

DD had 4 teeth removed when she had braces fitted aged around 12. Beautifully straight teeth within 6 months.

I have braces at 35. I could have had extractions but was advised there would be no point as teeth continue to move throughout your life and therefore perfectly straight is not a guarantee.

Search jensjawsurgeryjourney on Instagram.

She’s a woman in her mid fifties who had severe problems with overcrowding etc, and decided she’d go for the treatment. She’s still mid treatment and updates a photo every day to show how quickly her teeth have moved.

She’s VERY honest about how hard it’s been, but the change in her teeth has been incredible.

I had four teeth removed as a teenager due to bad crowding. Although my teeth aren’t perfectly straight, they are vastly better and I’m able to thoroughly clean them which was difficult when they were crossed.

I had mine out under sedation. I had it on the NHS as a teen because I needed 6 teeth out, but if you can have it done privately I would reccomend it.

My mum had 4 adult teeth removed due to overcrowding and you would never be able to tell.

PomegranateQueen · 12/11/2021 13:56

Apart from her lovely straight teeth that is! I meant it didn't change her face Smile

Your face can change ever so slightly in certain circumstances. It depends which teeth they are planning to extract?

Letsgetquizzy · 12/11/2021 14:10

I did, in my late thirties. I had always been terrified of the dentist but the lady who did it was lovely - ortho wouldn't do the extraction so I had to go back to mine. I explained how scared I was and put headphones on to listen to music - she used MASSES of anaesthetic and I was conscious of pulling and tugging and just bracing myself for a massive tug when she told me the tooth was out. She'd mainly twisted it out. Recovery was fine, just the usual weirdness of the anaesthetic wearing off.

Mine was actually to correct a massive gap, which I was told was due in part to having had one tooth removed as a child but not the corresponding one on the other side. When the work was completed, the gap was closed (and my bottom teeth did and still do look lovely!) but my front two teeth were slightly off centre. Ortho that I should have had a second tooth extracted (except he didn't- his concern was more the teeth heading off in the opposite direction). Should have pursued it but didn't but my gap has now returned after I broke my retainer so after much dithering I've decided to get it sorted once and for all, including an extraction if required. The fact that I would even consider an extraction is a sign for me that it wasn't that bad - am reasonably ok about it.

That's been the real upside for me - the extraction and braces have totally got me over my fear of the dentist. Am hoping I also end up with the teeth I want this time too (and will be very, very careful with them....)

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2021 15:12

I had two extractions for braces in my late 30s - had the braces for 4 years!
Teeth were straight with no crowding but front teeth stuck out a bit so needed to make space.
Teeth are nice now - not perfect but unfortunately I still have gaps where the extractions are. You can’t really see them front on but I’m disappointed with that. I am not sure how they would have otherwise created the space to move my front teeth back though. Also improved my bite and general profile in the process so there were some benefits.

I was assessed for Invisalign and told not suitable so I had proper braces. In any case I wasn’t keen on them shaving down my enamel to make the space which is what they do for Invisalign I think.

I had 4 teeth removed under GA then onto braces but I was 11 when the teeth were removed. I would 100% do it all over again. Makes me sad the nhs don't provide all of this anymore as standard as was the case when I had mine done. I was very very lucky! I remember all of it and have had 2 teeth extracted since and again if it meant having straight teeth I would definitely do it.

Teeth do continue to move but I have semi permanent braces which I paid for now to maintain my teeth which sit on the inside of my teeth.

Op look into Damon braces. They can do amazing things with them and avoid extractions altogether.
