Dresses like this but for a small person

I'm looking for something in-between my usual ultra casual (combats/t-shirts) and party clothes (good at those :) ) Having established on a previous thread that I'm a strange shape and have no waist & therefore high waisted style trousers definitely not my thing I'm pondering dresses.

I know a lot of people will hate this style, but the oversized / asymmetric feel is very much my sort of thing. Unfortunately even the S/M is massive! A bit on the long side, but just way, way too much dress going on overall.

I could really do with some suggestions as to places to look that might give me that sort of feel of dress but smaller. I've tried Uniqlo & Muji, which are generally good for fit on me, but nothing I fancy. Extra points for layer-able dresses (why I particularly fancied that one).

(ps, I am well aware that I dress strangely and have no style, but through painful experience if I buy smarter 'proper' clothes I just won't wear them as I feel all wrong)

No idea about the sizing but the Gemini clothing site has a few oversized dresses. This one comes in extra small

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/11/2021 10:29

Try Two Danes. They do a very easy to wear dress and Plumo used to sell them.
You could also try Rundholz
They come up on ebay and I have a few

I love the forgotten tribes look

Sadik · 12/11/2021 10:30

That looks like an excellent site, thank you for the recommendation :)

Sorry, that was for Gemini women. I'll check out Two Danes and Rundholtz too :)

I think in my mind I'm about 5'10"! I eventually gave away one my favourite ever 2nd hand bargains, a pair of Vivienne Westwood parachute silk dungarees because they so didn't fit me, but I couldn't resist wearing them Grin (and I still sort of regret having done so)

camilla cord dress

Sadik · 12/11/2021 16:51

Oh, that looks very much the sort of thing. I like their shorter tunics, too :)

They're very easy to wear. and sort of drape. The construction is quite complicated for such a light and practical garment

I have a few of them. If I hadn't seen them in Plumo I'd have thought they were a bit eccentric.

Sadik · 12/11/2021 17:27

I also really like that they have dress dimensions, it makes it so much easier to figure out if it's going to be a sensible size!

They only need to fit on the shoulders and the dress is meant to be generous. I'm a 10 in a dress and wear an S.

What are the sizes like at Muji. I bought things there decades ago and the sizes were tiny

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/11/2021 17:45

How small are you @Sadik? I'm 5'4.

Also, we seem to have similar taste so are there any brands you like that I might not have heard of?

Sadik · 12/11/2021 20:01

I'm not quite 5'2", but also very short in the body proportionally, which tends to make dresses come out oversized (and more or less zero boobs). For that kind of style I'd tend to look to Muji or Uniqlo, tbh. (Muji I take a M/L, so yes, definitely come up small)

Beyond that I shop at a really random selection of places, I've got good tops from Psylo (they look more conventional on than on the website!), my favourite jumpers are from Brora (in the sale!) & Finisterre, various bits from Ebay.

I second Rundholz. They're hideously expensive. I've bought all of mine on EBay. You could also try Oska

Sadik · 12/11/2021 20:15

I am currently down an Ebay rabbithole Grin

Look at Goose Island on FB and watch some of their live updates on catch-up. They have some great clothes (very reasonably priced) and the owner and staff model the clothes. I think two of them are 5' 3". I love watching their styling ideas.

I love watching them on a Monday and Friday but haven't bought anything yet but I definitely will be in the future.

Icequeen01 · 12/11/2021 20:27

Oh God that sounds like I was work for them and I promise you I don't!

Bebabelouba · 12/11/2021 20:33

Have a look at Odd Molly.

WhoppingBigBackside · 12/11/2021 20:41

Thanks @Sadik.
I get my clothes from charity shops. They are very good around here and cheap . Sometimes I customise the clothes or repurpose them.

If I find a brand I like, I'll look on ebay.

If I see someone just rocking a look I'll ask them. They'll either be embarrassed or they'll gladly tell you where they got it.
The people aren't any particular shape or height or age or ethnicity or sex. The clothes aren't expensive looking or fashionable - they just look right for the wearer

I sometimes buy fabric I like and have something made but because I manage to buy clothes so cheaply, I just have them altered

Sadik · 12/11/2021 21:21

Sadly the charity shops around here don't offer much bar rather worn out clothes from Peacocks and M&S, and there are a lot of upcyclers, so the odd better item gets bought PDQ. Ebay is definitely my friend :)

So do the ones near me but if I rummage I find brilliant things. Most of it is things like primark, boohoo, m&co etc but I recently got a petit bateau pea coat for £3, a brand new wool midi kilt for £2 and a liberty blouse for £2

Sadik · 13/11/2021 20:48

Odd Molly looks great @Bebabelouba - quite a bit on ebay too (which is good, since it's a bit out of my price range otherwise).

On a side note, I'm a bit bemused at people who buy these lovely & really not at all 'fashion' clothes and then sell them on presumably without that much wear. You'd think they'd be the sort of items that you'd wear until they fell apart
