What's the best perfume to buy?

I'm a bit late in getting my friend a present, and I'm thinking of getting her some perfume... so, my question is: What's the best perfume that's not too expensive?

How much do you want to spend?

choosyfloosy · 13/12/2007 15:16

What kind of style does she have, what age is she?

Go with the image that you think she likes to think she has, as reductive and restrictive as possible! Glamourpuss, sex kitten, flower girl, what?

If in complete doubt and 25 - 30, I'd say Coco Mademoiselle as few people would mind being associated with Chanel and Keira Knightley.

30 - 35 I'd say Chanel No 19.

35 - 45 I'd say Miss Dior.

45 upwards I'd say Je Reviens.

But then I loathe most new scents. My own favourite perfume smell is Oscar by Oscar de la Renta, but I hate the packaging and the name, and would be not that happy to get it from someone else unless I'd asked for it.

perfume is a minefield - so personal

get something else

EffiePerine · 13/12/2007 15:17

I love Floris stuff - unusual and not too expensive. The rose one is lovely.

TripLetItSnowAndTwins · 13/12/2007 15:17

About $60 which is about £30? Is that too little for decent perfume??

I never buy the stuff personally! When I go out, I go to a shop with perfume and use the testers!

I like Cliniques 'Aromatics Elixir' - £25 for a 25ml perfume spray. Cheaper if you get Eau de Toilette.

I agree though, it is a minefield and i'd be really unsure of what to get anyone else unless I knew which one she'd like........

agree with MrsBadger

this is a bit like 'which Autumn leaf should I catch?' imo

MerryAnnSinglemas · 13/12/2007 15:33

Jo Malone is about £35 a bottle

expatinscotland · 13/12/2007 15:37

perfumes are so personal, though.

what smells good on one person will smell awful on another and what one person likes on herself another won't.

does she have a fav already? or expressed an interest in a particular one?

i adore perfume, and collect them, basically, by asking for them as birthday, Xmas and anniversary presents.

but to me what i wear is dependent on my mood, the season, the event, etc.

so i'd say unless she has mentioned one in particular, get her something else.

i have to layer my scent because i don't hold scent well, so if perhaps your friend has mentioned a perfume she loves, how about getting her the body lotion or shower gel or hair scent.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2007 15:38

also, when you do use a tester, you should really give the perfume about 6 hours to develop.

or better yet, wear it overnight and see how it smells and how you like it.
