How much will tailors charge to take in an evening dress?

I bought a beautiful evening dress at an absolutely fantastic price a couple of days ago. It's arrived today but unfortunately it is too big on the waist / bust so I've booked an appointment with what looks like a very well reviewed tailoring service (central London) to have it taken in. I'm wondering if anyone might be able to tell me roughly what I should expect to pay?

To be clear I will pay it since this dress was an absolute steal and I know it will vary, I just want to be prepared so I don't look too shocked in the shop Grin

It's a full length sequin dress which is lined. I anticipate the sequins will complicate things and make it more expensive!

Anything upto £200 is my guess. I don't think the sequins will make too much difference but the lining will.

The fancy ones can be expensive. I paid £40 to have a stitch put in at the top of a dress and to have the arm holes taken in a bit. That was annoying as the dress was only £5 from a charity shop.

But equally I've been astonished at how cheap alterations are in the less fancy places. But if it's a complicated alteration you're probably right to go fancy. I would say up to £100?

I think I'm paying £70 for a neckline to be changed on an unlined sequin gown and another £50 for a lining to be changed at the hips of a lined draped gown (the lining is too small for my hips!).

Thanks all.

I paid £25 for this dress which was £250 on the high street(!!) so I'm very happy to pay a reasonable sum to get it adjusted.

I did consider places which seem cheaper near me - all the local dry cleaners do alterations - but with the nature of the dress I feel safer going to a dedicated alterations team / tailors.

Not quite the same location, lol, but we pay 7 quid for a bloke's shirt to be tailored (Droitwich area)

In the great British sewing bee they said that sequins had to be taken off individually before seeing as the machine couldn’t see through them.

That sounds time consuming and expensive.

Sorry I can’t help with the prices but shop around.

Sew through them

Ask on Facebook for seamstress recommendations. They are often cheaper and (I think) better. Are you only planning to wear the dress once? Is there any room for putting a few stitches in yourself? I often do this if it needs taking in a bit at the waist. Some fabrics are really forgiving and you don't notice that it's not a professional job.
