Washable slippers with arch support

Yes, I know this barely qualifies as 'style', but I guess that's where I am in life.

Thanks to breaking various bones I need something with a proper arch to keep my feet pointing the right way.

I used to wear sheepskin boot things in winter and washable cotton things in summer but I think they're too sloppy for my current needs. I'm not sure whether I have unusually unpleasant trotters, but anything else (especially if vaguely synthetic) absolutely honks before too long. I like the idea of e.g. Vionic slippers but I don't want to end up chucking them away when they start smelling like a corpse after a couple of months.

I can't seem to find anything in the this overlap of the slipper venn diagram. Any ideas?

Shit. You’re obviously far too stylish over here.

If you find any let me know. I have to wear crocs at home as I have plantar fasciitis and can't find any arch support slippers

JumpingFrogs · 08/11/2021 18:30

Fit Flop slippers have arch support. They've made a real difference to my plantar fasciitis, but they are not exactly things of beauty.

dunkaccino · 08/11/2021 18:30

Fur lined crocs. I don't belong on style and beauty.

Isabelle70 · 08/11/2021 18:35

I got some of the Vionic slippers this summer the pale pink ones. I have hand washed the upper with the slipper upside down in the bowl and they came up well. I now have a pair of black winter ones, hopefully easier to keep clean!

Crunched · 08/11/2021 18:35

I also have plantar fasciitis and I use suitable inserts in the base of all my slippers. That way I can buy any style, within reason, and transform them into a supportive pair.

ClitorisAllsorts · 08/11/2021 18:38

Birkenstock slippers? Depending on which you get you can wash the footbed or even replace it.

CottonSock · 08/11/2021 18:42

I'm trying the inserts mentioned above

I’ve reached a similar stage and bought some terrifyingly expensive (for slippers at any rate) from giesswein which are so very comfortable. Possibly even more so than my trainers with custom orthotics. They do an open back mule style too but I need the full foot ones as I need more support. I particularly like that they have rubber rather than plastic soles so I don’t clomp round the house like a cart horse.

I haven’t washed them yet - a month of constant wear and they don’t even have a hint of a whiff about them - but they are machine washable.

My only regret is not getting in quickly enough whilst they still had the red ones in stock, I have boring grey ones. I suppose I could have waited for the restock but I would have missed out on a month of blissful foot comfort.

These have a heel for support and are washable -

Re the smell..Do you wear socks with slippers or go barefoot?

You can also look into foot deodorants.

jessmin · 08/11/2021 18:55

Definitely not a thing of beauty. EasyB do House Shoes that are sturdy slippers. They have some styles that are machine washable and have removable insoles that you can replace with orthopaedic ones. You get get rubber insoles that can be washed in warm soapy water.

These house shoes are often used in care homes for stability and support, with very smelly feet and also medicated creams making it essential to wash them often. They're a good product, if you get them and are happy, make sure you get a 2nd pair. They are not tumble dryer proof and need to air dry. Can take 12-24hrs so you may want a 2nd pair.

I actually rather like those. They’ve got a sort of utilitarian charm! Is the wool pretty sturdy? I had some Haflingers a few years ago and ended up with a hole over my big toe.

This is actually quite a good call. Am currently styling it out in socks and birkies around the house.

I have a pair of gumbies slippers. Decent arch support and machine washable!

broccolibush · 08/11/2021 20:31

Yes it’s sturdy stuff - quite thick and well felted.

TellMeSomeGoodNewsPlease · 09/11/2021 13:40

Went ahead and ordered some Giessweins as the website gave me a 25% discount code so they were “only” £50 odd quid (to be fair if I’m wearing them for 12+ hours per day that doesn’t seem so bad). Will report back.

broccolibush · 10/11/2021 09:14

Good luck! And thank you for the heads up on the 25% off - I've just ordered the merino runners without the slight clench that goes along with the how much

I dread to think how much I willingly spent on pairs of beautiful yet uncomfortable shoes when I was young, yet I struggle so much with ones that will protect my feet.

ForSaleChesterDraws · 27/12/2021 23:04

How are you getting on with the Giessweins @TellMeSomeGoodNewsPlease

I’m loving them, thanks for asking! I thought they were a bit firm when I first got them (they don’t have that instant squishy feel of normal slippers) but they are so comfy after a few days of wearing in. I wear them pretty much all day everyday at the moment and I just forget I’ve got them on. And they still look/smell in decent nick.
