Hello all,

I am looking to buy a down winter coat for extremely cold weather ...around -10 or lower! My husband and I are in Finland/Helsinki this winter and temperatures are going to be chilly to say the least.
We are planning on being in Scandinavia quite a bit so I am looking for an investment.
My max would be £350 or there about.
I am looking for a warm winter coat. I am quite short but a coat to cover most of my legs would be a bonus.
Can anyone recommend some good quality brands?

Thanks

Didrksons do some very warm jackets/coats - on their website the warmest one is £420 but I know you can get their coats from Sportamore or Hollands country clothing a lot cheaper.

Danefae?

I just recommended this brand on a different thread - they do different warmth ratings (down to -25).

Fjallraven is good, but I’m not sure about the prices

GoingForAWalk · 07/11/2021 22:17

Wouldn't they have more suitable brands there for that temperature. Can you wait and make do for a couple of days.

I live in a cold country and my winter coat is from Helly Hansen. It’s really warm but looks good too, I love it.

Hi, Canadian with a Norwegian parent here. Look at outdoor brands - Didrikson is good but so are many others. Most Brits just buy a very thick chunky coat but forget about the rest - you need layers. I recommend good thermals plus a merino-wool cardigan/jumper for layering - layers help more than one massive coat! And don't forget warm socks and shoes with a good grip. The pavement will be slippery.

Thanks for all your replies 🙂
I've had a good look and indeed you've given me some fantastic recommendations.
Off to do a bit of internet shopping

Didriksons are brilliant.

Swede here, check Didrikson, Tenson, Fjallraven. Zoolando and Boozt are good sites to try. But but but - you need layers. Several of them. So thin breathable wool closest to the skin, then a cotton layer, then another cotton or wool layer. Same with boots and shoes. Buy a size up to allow for insulating inner soles and two pairs of socks.
For your skin dont use moisturiser or makeup with a high water content as it will freeze your skin and leave scarring. Don't wash your hair in the morning before you go out as it will freeze if not completely dried.

I am in a similar dilemma and was thinking of this one, because I could use it in urban and trekking and work context here:

What do you think?

I would buy it in Helsinki, there are some good Finnish brands too like Joutsen you can easily find in the big department stores.

The cold temperatures in Helsinki don't feel quite as cold as they sound in comparison to the UK by the way - it's a different kind of a coldness entirely, not damp like British winters.
