Really struggling to find the right coat - water proof, long duvet/ over size style

dudsville · 07/11/2021 08:43

When I Google for this I get all sorts of coats that aren't water proof when I actually click on them. All I can find is lululemon (never bought from them, not really for a southern UK climate, and who wants to spend that on a coat) and north face triple c parka. Now I like the look of this triple c fine, not enamoured with it or anything, find the branding logo a bit ott, but the colour choices are so limited and when spending a lot on a coat I don't want to have so many criticisms. I don't like what Lands End have to offer. Hobbs has one but really it's mid thigh length and I want it to be long. Have I painted myself into a corner here?

Are you looking for a puffer style? If so then most won’t be properly waterproof. Rains have waterproof puffers though, so worth looking there. If you’re looking for a parka style there should be more options.

TuftyRusty · 07/11/2021 10:07

Just looked at the North Face one you mentioned - it’s not waterproof, just water repellant.

Oh - and Hunter also do some puffers so worth looking there too!

missmoon · 07/11/2021 11:00

Uniqlo do a hybrid coat that is both waterproof and has insulation, it looks smooth on the outside though, not duvet.

dudsville · 07/11/2021 11:25

Thanks for spotting that Tufty, and I've had a look at Rains but not Hunter - I'll check them, also I thought I checked Uniqlo... maybe I didn't see that one, thanks Missmoon.

Have you looked at Didriksons?

dudsville · 07/11/2021 17:58

Thank you missmoons! Very kind of you to link. That coat is the forerunner, not what I wanted, really, but I think sizing up could make it cosy...

I have looked at Didricksons, thanks covetingthepreciousthings, not found anything.

I'm in London so I'm going to go into actual shops tomorrow. I dead it so much, I've become such a homeboy, but the thought of possibly ordering and returning so many coats also stresses me. Wish me luck.

Depends what size you need as it's sold out in quite a few sizes, but this coat is fully waterproof and warm..

Blankiefan · 07/11/2021 19:12

I was on this shopping mission two years ago. After almost buying a super expensive one I ended up buying one from George (Asda). Its super cosy and waterproof. It could have more pockets but is a great coat - particularly for the money. Here's a link to this year's (I bought it in khaki). link

What about this?

Waterproof coats can be real hot, so a waterproof puffer coat will be boiling!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/11/2021 19:32

Truly waterproof down jackets are a rarity, as down needs to air, which waterproof shells do not lend themselves too. But they do exist! You need to look away from the fashion labels, and more towards the outdoors pursuits market. Patagonia do this well, at a price, but you’ll never need another coat!

No worries @dudsville - I’ve been looking for similar so been eagle eyed about whether they’re waterproof or water resistant Grin

I don’t know if you want to spend quite this much, but I got one from here in the end - they do quite a few oversized puffer styles which are waterproof.

Oooh, I'm off to Google the € to £ rate. Which one did you get tuftyrusty? What do you think of it?

dudsville · 08/11/2021 07:53

That "asha" looks like a nice length. I wouldn't turn it inside out thigh like they're suggesting, that seems weird. Understandably they don't offer free returns so I'm also a little anxious about sizing. I'd be curious to know what size you chose too, if I may, whether it's like your UK size?

Try Cotton Traders or blacks

bookish83 · 08/11/2021 08:20

Arket have some- not sure of the specifics but they look nice!

Bought this last year and really happy with it. But sold out in black only 3XL left and navy has XL left

I have the earlier version of this Patagonia city jacket and I love it! It's plain and super high performance. It's not cheal at £200 but it's well made and there's a free repairs service (think you have to pay the shipping cost there and back).

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 08/11/2021 11:29

I've got the Rains one and it is fantastic. (Long waterproof puffer) I suppose it is not long-long though.

Winterjoy · 08/11/2021 11:42

I got this one recently and impressed so far - and it's warm, waterproof and long enough to keep my thighs dry! Not oversized style but potentially could size up for a looser fit?

DH used to work in outdoor gear retail, and at the time, the shop he worked in were one of the few UK suppliers of Patagonia. We had friends who worked at Patagonia in Chamonix too; both shops sold out of the City Coat almost as soon as it was put out.I know an original one (1999 ish) still going strong.

Hey @dudsville - I actually got the Asha! I was between XS and S according to their size chart and emailed them for sizing advice - they responded the same day and were really helpful. They said size down in that model which I did and fits well. I’m the same height as the model in the pics so that helped for sizing too. I’m happy with it so far - it fits well, looks good and feels good quality. But - I haven’t had a chance to wear it in proper cold weather yet but I feel like its going to be very warm.
