Does a stylish dressing gown exist?

didireallysaythat · 31/10/2021 22:05

Or does everyone look like a fat flump in one?

Is it possible to be warm and stylish?

I think stylish dressing gowns do exist. But you will pay more for them than one posh frock and 2 special casual dresses with the price for all 3 lumped together.

That certainly made me think again!

AlphabetAerobics · 01/11/2021 11:48

I have a nice one, floor length, long sleeved, velvet and lined. Only fault is no pockets. Tesco of all places about 6 years ago.

Because it’s lined and it’s NOT fucking fleece, it properly drapes giving me the silhouette of a supermodel. (Ahem)

I can’t stand the fleece stuff - makes everyone look like a fat, sweaty toddler - and usually comes in childish prints too.

LizLemonsGlasses · 01/11/2021 12:04

It's the holy grail isn't it! I'm after the same thing - I do love my current fleecy one because it's cosy but it's so old it looks permanently grubby and is a bit frumpy. I have a nice men's grey waffle one I got for the summer but it's too thin for a Scottish winter - I need something cosier!

It's hard to find something that's not fleece/fluffy, looks good and doesn't require a second mortgage!

This is what I want - desmondanddempsey.com/products/the-jag-print-womens-quilted-robe-navy - but no way will I be paying £300+ quid for it!!

beguilingeyes · 01/11/2021 12:25

One Hundred Stars absolutely. The patterns are gorgeous and they are beautifully cut and hang perfectly. I want them to make me a dress.

Mercurial123 · 01/11/2021 12:57

I have a cashmere dressing gown from Saks bought on EBay for a bargain. I use it in winter.

Shibumi are quite lightweight, I don't wear mine in winter. I'm size 8/10 and have the small it's huge. I would say Medium would be fine for a size 14.

Joules Tangerine Dream dressing gown. £99.

nopuppiesallowed · 02/11/2021 18:31

Try A Hundred Stars. I love mine. Fluffy dressing gowns make me look like a furry, fat, sausage roll. My Hundred Stars one makes me look like the leading role in an Agatha Christie film.

Badtasteflump · 02/11/2021 19:05

After years of searching, I found the perfect dressing gown last year. It's brushed cotton, not thick and clumpy, ankle length and sooooo cosy. Every time I put it on I feel wrapped up in smugness 😊. Link: british-boxers.com/collections/womens-robes/products/womens-ash-grey-herringbone-robe

Badtasteflump · 02/11/2021 19:07

I have it in grey but I'm seriously tempted to buy an emergency back up one in pink, just in case..

Why is almost all modestly priced nightwear TOO SHORT. Often nobody even indicates the length of pyjamas or dressing gowns. One size is expected tofit all i.e. probably some one of 5 feet four. What do " ankle length " or " floor length" actually mean ?

Malibuismysecrethome · 03/11/2021 01:22

I buy them from hotels I stay in. Favourite being from hotel in Hong Kong and Las Vegas.

wabbeydabbeydo · 03/11/2021 10:23

I'm in love with this

I was tempted by these too! But I haven't bought yet because they looked too thin to be warm enough. Perhaps I'm underestimating the warmth of yak wool?! (A sentence I didn't think I'd be typing today... 😂)

I have two mens cotton flannel dressing gowns from Lee Valley. One to wash one to wear. They are long, have long arms, deep pockets. I also have two of their mens night shirts. They are all roomy and cosy, but the robes have belts that cinch in the waist and look slimming. I just checked and they don't have the plaids I chose at the time. Mine are 5 years old. All in very good condition.

I think you may have just spoilt me for all other dressing gowns!

One of those with some silk pjs for flitting around in the summer in manner of 1930s ingenue.... I mean, my ingenue days are gone but I could try.

midsomermurderess · 03/11/2021 12:50

Toast does these , which are a bit more that a dressing gown I'd say, but rather fine. Pricey though.

Does a stylish dressing gown exist?
midsomermurderess · 03/11/2021 12:52

Or this, not so expensive.

Mercurial123 · 03/11/2021 13:49

The Toast kantha dressing gowns are really overpriced. You can buy good quality ones from India for a lot less. Etsy sell them.

midsomermurderess · 03/11/2021 15:04

The kantha dressing gowns I've seen on Etsy look quite flimsy. But yes, the Toast ones are very expensive.

Mercurial123 · 03/11/2021 15:18

The ones I've seen in India are really good quality for a fraction of the Toast price. I only mentioned Etsy as they have them available.

Puppylucky · 04/11/2021 23:40

@lizLemonsGlasses - no the yak wool dressing gowns aren't thin at all - they feel like light blankets without the weight if that makes sense?

Fiftyand · 04/11/2021 23:47

Yes

I have a Charmeuse dressing gown which is lovely - parents got it on holiday from a market so really cheap but really silky and lovely.

Very excited to be getting a silk one for christmas as we are expecting our first born next year (its a family tradition as later we chop them to make 'blankies' as a comforter - apparently very handy as you keep secret squares back to swap for washing and to replace for when the kid inevitably loses it!)

But with the 'stylish' look - I do think its all in how you tie them. Don't wrap the belt round your waist. Just wrap it through the loop from the front and tie. So much more comfortable.

@Puppylucky thanks for the extra info - I think you've convinced me! Love the idea of being wrapped in a warm blanket :)

Am going to take the plunge and order one - hopefully it will be just what I've been looking for!
